In 1993, the year that he created "La DS," Mr. Orozco's career took off with multiple exhibitions. Among them was one that Marian Goodman arranged at the Venice Biennale, where he showed "Empty Shoebox," an open cardboard box left on the floor to be kicked about. "It shocked everybody," Ms. Goodman said. "He has a lot of courage in what he does and can be quite radical."

"THE CHANGE" (Box Project)

Explanation:
This project is about change and the difficult process that comes with it. I thought that the butterfly's metamorphosis was a familiar and beautiful portrayal of change, and personal to me at the moment. I want to figure out who I am, what I believe, what matters to me and be free from doubts. I guess the process of figuring myself out is like being in a cocoon. A lot of magnificent change is happening, but it's dark and you don't really know what's going on. It's also really scary to go through drastic changes-sometimes it feels wrong and one wonders if they should shrink back and return to the "caterpillar" or "comfortable" stage. We are often scared to break from what we were taught and what we are familiar with, but if we stay where we are, we'll never get anywhere new.
The Cocoon is made from a wire armature, then wrapped in layers of tissue paper, newspaper and excerpts cut from a vintage book on Renaissance England writings. These excerpts have purposefully chosen words. The underlying newspaper is actually a Wheaton newspaper, because I feel Wheaton has really shaped me this year. I made the Butterfly from a wire armature wrapped in tissue paper and coated with painted wool, gouache-painted paper wings, and antennae made from a feather. I included the England Renaissance book spine because that's where I got the excerpts in the box, and because a lot of change occurred during the Renaissance.
The Artist I took inspiration from is Joseph Cornell.

I really like that your inspiration comes from lived experiences. A lot of contemporary artists in Chicago are working within that realm. The process in which you made the butterfly is super interesting. Wondering what that could look like on a large scale for the next project. -SBW

Thank you! That would actually be awesome! -Alissa

This box invites you to ponder the Author - of all creation and our individual lives.

The rock on the left is a piece of chlorite marble from the Black Hills, SD. The rocks in the center are pieces that I collected from a pegmatite dike in the Black Hills when I was there for geology field camp two summers ago. On the right is a piece of gneissic granite. As a geology major, I've thought a lot about how God has revealed himself in both his Word and in nature. I look at these rocks and am in awe of all the processes that took place to create them. I am drawn to worship because God WAS THERE and worked out the placement and growth of every mineral that makes up these rocks. The rocks are arranged to depict a book, and are hung with brass wire. I included Psalm 139 on some hand-made paper on the right. It kind of looks like pages from the book, and the words remind me that not only is God the author of the majestic natural world, but he is also the author of all of MY days.

Wow, tell us about this box Sophia! Are those rocks? Very interesting!
-SBW

Thanks for filling us in! Have you thought about differentiating the wood background from the objects?

This project is a period reference to the 70's and 80's, with many allusions to that era also in the collage. The stereo at the top plays through the smaller set of speakers (not the 45's). A string of light bulbs goes through the inside of the box and shines through the paper shell as well as from the records (unfortunately not turned on in this picture). On the back of the box there is a hole cut with a door nob drill bit through which you can twist the nob to change the radio station and it now has a set of wooden antenna.

Absolutely gorgeous! What's the size?
-SBW

So there's also a sound component?

so this is my box project, during the class periods I had made one of the classic boxes in the woodshop, but in the rush of packing to move home last weekend I mistakenly packed that box into my storage, and unpacked at home to realize I don't have it. So, I remade another wooden box (out of different wood that I had to find around my yard). I used my box as a kind of frame for my embroidery, the main feature of this piece. Honestly, I don't really know how to properly write/express what this piece is trying to convey. The best I can do is say that when I was sewing I was thinking about "IT" (the big brain) and the red-eyed man from A Wrinkle in Time- something evil or sinister wresting control from us in some way, and some kind of loss of freedom and not being able to see clearly as outside forces rage against us, a haze overpowering us. Sorry if that doesn't make sense, you can also leave it up to your own interpretation ! :)

Wow, great problem solving with the wood. I like your explanation. Sometimes art speaks for itself, it articulates the things and ideas not easily formed in formal language. Its one of its powers. The detail around the eye is incredible, it reads like paint. Check out the 40 under 40 exhibit at the Smithsonian, there are a few people working with fiber and embroidery. The Smithsonian channel has a nice film about it here: https://watch.smithsonianchannel.com/details/show/40-under-40

For my project location I plan on going to a near-by nature path where some of my favorite trees are. The top two photos (in collage below) are of the tree I like most, and below are two other trees I might use if they turn out to work better. Even though this path and the scenery is so ordinary and familiar to me, these trees are still magical and beautiful. They seem like they ought to be in a majestic enchanted forest, and I absolutely adore anything fantasy.
I plan on making to do a continuation of my box project, this time on a larger scale. I want to make a large paper mache butterfly and cocoon and hang them from a tree branch. Not only will this hold the same meaning for me as the box project did, but I feel it will be so magical to see and hopefully make somebody smile in this hard time. I know this is not "multiples" but have discussed it with Professor Woods who has kindly given me the ok. I might even incorporate multiples into it somehow, probably stones or leaves in a pattern on the ground beneath the paper mache.

I have two ideas for my multiples project that I need to further think about. I live on a farm and have a ton lot of wood fencing. I know that fences aren't exactly nature, but wood is a natural material and I am hoping to incorporate more. I am hoping to maybe do something with either memories or wishes, or both. I am thinking that maybe I will have people tie their wish or memory to the fencing, hopefully with some type of natural resource. My other idea involves a needle and a haystack. I thought it might ironic to have either a needle sticking up out of hay arranged a certain way, or have multiple needles and few pieces of hay.

I really like the idea of working with fences-both as protections, barrier and way to keep people in or out. Let's set up a time for a google hang out and we can contemplate and concretize your ideas more. I think it would be really cool if I could make a big wind chime, using clear fishing line to suspend all of the shells from some kind of wooden top (most likely pieces of driftwood) at different lengths and in different spiraling patterns. I would hang it from a tree in my yard, because in several spots it's often quite windy and it would be cool to hear that many shells blowing and clinking together.

This sounds great. It makes me think of a Chicago-based artist named Edra Soto. If you click on "portfolio" on her site she has quite a few projects utilizing shells influenced from growing up in Puerto Rico.

https://edrasoto.com/section/430726.html

AND
http://www.carlosrolon.com/work/crystal-street/

I was finally able to find all the pieces to my doll house. After the big move back home, I lost many parts. Anywayyy, it’s not much but here is my Doll House!!

I decided to make a doll house because I remember making little houses for my Barbie dolls when I was younger! I honestly had no idea how it was going to turn out! Everything you see inside the box, I made! I glued a cloth to the back of the box, and I glued a little window to the cloth. The window is made out of a small picture from a magazine and cotton swabs. I added stairs that actually lead to the second floor!

I had so much fun making this, and I’m happy I got to revisit my childhood for a little bit! I’ll upload more pictures so you can see what’s inside!

This is wonderful! The fact that it's in a box takes it out of the dollhouse context-it changes it and adds layers of meaning. Opens it up to multiple interpretations and meanings.

SBW

Hi Guys! So for my multiples project, I am using printer paper as my medium of choice. Origami has been the majority of my artistic background so I am excited to be folding again :) In this process, I have really enjoyed playing with the idea of repetition as each piece of paper has been carefully folded to be identical in size, shape, and structure. This type of Origami is special because it is modular meaning that several sheets of paper are assembled together in order to create a more complex structure. In this way, my art incorporates both art and math in order to calculate how each individual piece will support the other. I find this to be a really tangible metaphor for how the body of Christ is composed of individuals who are unified under one structure- one purpose.

In terms of my site-specific area, I planned to install it outside, however due to weather limitations (snow, rain, wind etc.) I quickly realized the structure of my medium would not hold up under the elements haha.

I look forward to sharing my project with you guys in a few hours! See you guys soon!

For the "multiples" bit, I used a bunch of scraps of different fabrics to make the girl in the embroidery a mask, from the fabrics me and my mom have been using to sew our own wearable masks. I guess this piece is just trying to communicate some of the sadness and loneliness I (along with a lot of other people) feel during this time of uncertainty corona has brought, dealing with quarantine and social distancing. interpret from it what you would like though!

After he died, life just went on and I feel like I didn't get to commemorate his life in any way. For this project, I gathered sticks around the pond he rests in and created crosses, then stuck the crosses in the ground around the pond. I used E600 to create the bond.

Lillian Mejia G Garden animation!

Made a little animation of some daisies and roses in our front Garden since it’s empty! Everyone in our complex usually plants vegetables and flowers in our garden for our community to enjoy. Since quarantine we haven’t been able to plant anything so I wanted to fill it full of lovely flowers! I chose to do a sort of continuation of my last project since I wasn’t satisfied. The garden still felt so empty so I wanted to make it feel more alive and colorful this time!!

Final Project

For my final project, I wanted to do something with masks, a bit of a continuation of my last project, but I struggled a bit with what I wanted to do. This is what I came up with. I remembered seeing this style of writing from maybe the early 2000s of having a phrase that was written in a way to be read 2 different ways; upside down and right side up. I'm not sure who came up with the original idea but its been done a few times and so I created my own project inspired by that idea. I drew out the words onto fabric, then embroidered them (this took a bit because hard to block stitch thin lines), then sewed it into a mask (my mom taught me how, we've been making them this whole corona time). If you wear the mask one way, it reads "I'm fine", but if you flip it over it says "Save me". I thought this was an interesting idea to out on a mask because during this time of uncertainty, its easy to put on our own masks (physical and emotional) and pretend we're alright- when we really might not be. Hope you like!
