During today's lecture, Hans mentioned that there is a distinction between the 'perceived population decline' by individuals and the 'observed population decline' for a certain region. I think this was an interesting observation, even though Hans did not go into this in his research, I would be interested in the further implications of such perceived/subjective and observed/objective phenomena in relation to migratory patterns.

It was interesting to see the differences in mobility according to people's age and life circumstances that made it more likely that certain villages experienced population growth rather than decline. Although the presentation only vaguely touched upon the issue of urbanization, I wonder if there are also countries that experience substantial population growth in the rural areas due to mobility

I liked how he explained the topic. it was good and easy to follow. I found quite some similarities with the region where I come from. which made the presentation even more interesting.
I would have liked to hear more about the practical solutions that the regional/local/national government is using in order to deal/reduce the population decline in rural areas in the North of the Netherlands because this (important) aspect has only been briefly mentioned during the presentation.

What I found really interesting about Hans Elshof's lecture is that he tried to show the spatial heterogeneity of population decline. Not all areas are declining and even within declining areas, some areas are still growing. It depends on the scale looked at. Lastly, I liked the qualitative components in his research to get insight in the perceived effects of population decline.

I found it interesting that Hans mentioned that service decline and declining economy is not only due to a declining population. I am wondering what other factors/reasons there are for this decline. Another interesting thing that Hans found in his research was that closing a service increases social cohesion in a village.

Even if the world’s population grows, the population in North Netherlands declines. It seems very interesting and paradox at the same time that the rural areas lose the amount of inhabitants based on various reasons. Those reasons might be due to fertility decline, moving behavior, no perspectives in the rural areas for young people, no caring facilities and services for old people. Additionally, it was striking to understand the consequences of people moving away from the rural areas which imply the livability and quality of life, the housing vacancy, a declining economy and services. “Movers” have been classified into categories based on family size or age, and the inflow and outflow has been visualized which was interesting to see as the entire Netherlands seems to be in a continuous flow. Finally, human behavior appears to tend to co-evolution and self-organization, especially in smaller communities.

It was really interesting to see how service decline in villages played a vital role in people moving out to urban areas and this was a factor which influenced other people in moving out as a result. But I somehow find the major causes for population decline are rather inter-connected than being totally different issues. But I was rather surprised to see that "more number of older people in Netherlands" was not a major cause in population decline.
