Can't climb over
Trapped behind 
Is who I really am
Not the stranger you think you know
      
We live in a plastic world
Where we are actors
In the movie of our lives
We act how we are expected
We say what they want to hear

My identity is fake
When I am with you
My personality is limited
Because I don't live in a world
Where my real one would be welcomed

My blue mustang inflicts fear
Because what comes out of it
Doesn't end well for greasers
That is not what I want to be known for

I want to be a greaser
Wild and free
Who I actually want to be
I want to show my true identity

Greasers wear hair greaser
It's part of who they are
They don't think about it
They just wear it
With happiness and pride
Their leather jackets
Glistening in the sun
They are free, happy, and most importantly
Real

What I would do to be free
To be loved for who I am
But no matter how much I try
That is impossible
I'm stuck
I'm helpless
I'm fake

It shows identity (which was my theme) because it shows how the identity of the Socs' is fake. Throughout the book, but mainly at the "Nightly Double" when Cherry and Pony were talking,  it was mentioned that Socs' are expected to be rich and perfect and that it shows in their personality. I decided that since that was a huge part of the book, that I should use that as inspiration for my poem Even though it is a lot about Social Classes, it expresses so much about how both sides (rich and poor) have identities, whether they are willing to show them or not. I chose the blue mustang and the hair grease as my symbols because I think it shows really important ways that identity is shown in the Outsiders. It was really important because the blue mustang is kind of what the Socs' are known for. It is there effect on others which makes it an important factor in the Outsiders. I chose hair grease because it is a popular appearance that is part of the stereotypes made of the Greasers. When Ponyboy and Johnny were talking in the church Ponyboy was saying how their hair is what made them Greasers.
