Netiquette #1 - Remember The Human

The first rule of Netiquette, Remember the Human, is about exactly what the title says. Internet users, which is a majority of us, need to understand that on the other side of our screens are other people. This rule explained how often times individuals do not think properly before directing a negative comment or message to another online, which could in turn have repercussions for both parties. It can leave the victim feeling bad, and the cyber-bullying can potentially come back to haunt the perpetrator in the future, as just about everything online is encrypted and stored somewhere.

I chose to discuss the netiquette, because I feel as if it is one of the easiest ones to fall victim to, whether it be you posting the comment or receiving the negative comment. I also think that this rule is very important o teach students as they should have an understanding of the impact the online comments could have on others. It is also important to teach so that students know that what they post online is still online, whether or not they delete it.

Netiquette #5- Make Yourself Look Good Online

Summed up, the fifth rule of netiquette states that it is crucial to be aware and be careful about what we post online, because it is a reflection of oneself. You have to be conscious of what you post online, because others will see it and it will greatly influence their opinions of you. This rule also warned of trying to steer clear of swearing online, as it can be trashy and unappealing. If a 'bad word' is needed it is advised to replace it with a clever euphemism.

I chose to talk about this rule because I personally did not realize how important it was until I started applying for college and jobs a few years ago. I realized that what I had posted was being seen by others online. It is crucial for individuals to remain professional, even online in order to make a good impression. It it important for students to learn about this rule because they need to be professional online, as it will influence their future, as employers, recruiters, and educators will see their online activity.

Rule # 8- Respect Other People's Privacy

This rule is also quite self explanatory from the title. The blurb online discusses how you would not go through another persons desk (hopefully), so it is also no acceptable to go through their online information. Many individuals store private information online, that is strictly confidential, and it not to be shared with others, so going through the information, without permission, can cause trust issues, as well as legal issues.

I decided to discuss this rule because it is important that I, as well as everybody else who utilizes the internet, understands that it is not appropriate to go through information that is not meant for us. It is important to teach students about this rule, as we all know that children are quite nosey- they LOVE to know what is going on with everybody. So, therefore it is important tat they know that there is a boundary online that they cannot cross.

Netiquette #10 - Be Forgiving of Other People's Mistakes.

The tech rule of netiquette serves to remind us that at one point we were confused on how to navigate the internet and fluidly browse through website- we were beginners at one point too. It is important that we all remember to respect when others make mistakes on the internet, as not only do we not know the circumstances, but we can come across as rude, if we single them out in front of all of their online friends. Pointing out mistakes online, public, can have the other party feeling embarrassed. If someone does make a mistake online, it is advised to point it out politely, if needed.

I discussed this netiquette, because this is an issue that I see just about everyday on social media. So often people are pointing out and scrutinizing others innocent mistakes, which can be embarrassing for them, when on a public platform. It is important that students are informed on this issue as, it may not seem like a big deal to them to point out a mistake, but it can have a negative impact on the receiving end. It is also so important to teach students to be forgiving of mistakes as we all make them.

I would potentially teach students about this netiquette by first reiterating the well known quote, treat others how you want to be treated. I would then explain the rule, telling them how their words can have a negative impact on others, and how their online posts can be traced back to them. I would also feel as if it would be a good opportunity to show older students movies on cyberbullying such as Cyber-Bully and A Girl Like Her, as both movies show the impacts that cyberbullying, can have on developing teenagers.

I would teach students about the fifth rule of netiquette by example. I previously had a presenter come into my high school and search students online and he showed us information that he had found online, and it was really influential to see just how easy it is to obtain information from the internet, even if you do not know it was there. I think that would be a good tactic to show students how they have to make themselves look good online, as it would not be good for future employers to find negative information about home online that could leave the without a job, and even potentially get them into legal trouble.
