Some argue that the media and public focus too much on celebrity deaths while ignoring more critical issues like world crises or everyday tragedies. While many express sadness, the actual impact on their personal lives is often minimal compared to losing a close family member or friend. News outlets and businesses may exploit a celebrity's death for views, clicks, or financial gain rather than genuine remembrance. Some believe that public mourning is performative, with people exaggerating their grief for social media validation rather than truly being affected.

This article looks at how people react when a famous person dies, especially how they grieve and buy things related to that celebrity. The researchers studied online fan reactions after the death of NASCAR driver Dale Earnhardt. They found that fans deal with their sadness in two big ways: taking on traits of the celebrity and buying celebrity-related stuff. I plan to use this article for my economic lens to show how much people buy things related to the celebrity after they pass as well as how people will profit of making merchandise of said dead celebrity.

Fans often form parasocial relationships with celebrities, feeling deeply connected to them. Their deaths can cause grief, sadness, and even depression. The passing of a celebrity can shift societal discussions (e.g., Robin Williams' death increasing awareness of mental health). Companies, brands, and industries tied to a celebrity may see financial shifts (e.g., sales of music, movies, or memorabilia increase). Some fans may find motivation to carry on a celebrity's work, advocate for causes they supported, or change their behavior (e.g., Kobe Bryant’s Mamba Mentality influencing young athletes).
