It is significantly harder for certain people to reach their full potential due to stereotypes or superstitions linked to things such as gender, race and ethnicity. They are restrained by societies’ beliefs; which are that they’re minorities and less than everyone else; that their more likely to commit a crime solely because on their race or they can not accomplish something from their gender, for example. They essentially need to prove themselves to be accepted and respected in the world or simply follow the path built using gender roles, stereotypes and racism.

Themes:
-Bias
-prejudice
-Judgement

This artifact supports my answer because in the book, Tom Robinson was falsely convicted and accused of a crime solely because of the color of his skin.

Evidence:
- "People still looked at the Radley Place, unwilling to discard their initial suspicions" (Lee 11)
- "There is nothing more sickening to me than a low grade white man who'll take advantage of [An african americans] innocence" (Lee 293).

Analysis:
- This relates back to my theme because the superstitions about Boo Radley and his family leds to Maycomb having a negative idea of him, even though, later on he helps the Finch family. Superstitions or rumors like the ones about Boo Radley cause society to judge people based on things that are simply inaccurate even if they are good people like in this case.

- Tom Robinson was stereotyped, at the time, as the typical African American man that commits crimes and hurts people. He was innocent and there was no sufficient evidence against him; This is a big effect of stereotypes on society since it can lead to injustices and unfair treatment towards people, based on things they can not control. Conclusions are immediately drawn in everyday life with the help of stereotypes and inaccurate conclusions are drawn.

Source:
Paper copy of TKAM
Genre- historical fiction

The main character, Mulan, pretends to be a man in order to help her father. She does this because woman are not allowed to serve in the military because of the stereotypes and superstitions between woman and the army. Nobody knew about her secret and she was proof what whatever a man can do can be done by a woman as well. Society sees women as less than men or minorities, and Mulan helped challenge that.

Evidence:
- "You must teach your daughter to hold her tongue in a man's presence" (1:23).
- Everyone discovered that she was a woman and they were extremely shocked (1:28).

Analysis:
- This relates back to the theme since the stereotypes around women being weaker led to these requirements and setbacks for things like the war. Woman supposedly had their own duties and were needed to be a certain way. This affects the world because not everyone can fit into the molds created by stereotypes and these setbacks or rules in society can lead to problems like with Mulan's father being the only male in the family. He still had to go to war even though he was ill; Mulan was fully capable and wanted to help her father but was prevented by these ideas of gender roles in daily life.

Sources:
{Youtube scenes of Mulan}
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C9lq96_CUDM (first)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pjfWcQzgXEY (second)
Genre- Action/Childrens film

Hidden Figures directed by Theodore Melfi

This artifact supports my answer because in the movie the three main characters are African American women in a male dominated workspace and they experienced many stereotypes or setbacks because of their gender and race. “Hidden Figures” takes place in 1961, where it was still difficult for working women and African Americans to have those opportunities or be successful with the beliefs of the society.

Evidence:
- “Would you try to be an engineer if you were a white man?” “I wouldn’t have to, i’d already be one” (1:05:24)

- "There are very few women working in the space program" (0:33:21)

Analysis:
- White men were guaranteed jobs or opportunities because they were believed to better and smarter compared to African Americans or women. Society will be impacted because those who are intelligent or hard working will not be able to accomplish what they dream of or they will have a harder journey to reach that goal.

- This will relate back to my theme because, at the time, society believed that women or African Americans were not capable of being in high profile work places like NASA or being well educated. In the movie, the three women continue to do what makes them happy and break the stereotypes causing bias; eventually proving them all wrong. The quote shows that women are more than dressing up and being a background character to a man; that they can make changes in the world and promote good in society.

Sources:
Hulu
Genre: Drama
