Gravimetric analysis is a method to extract pure element from it's ore. For my analysis I mixed calcium chloride with sodium carbonate and seperated them using a funnel to obtain sodium chloride (salt).

Doing the gravimetric analysis helped me develop various experimental skills such as measuring the mass and volume of substances, and drying to a constant mass. I also utilized specific inquiries to investigate the outcome of the experiment, such as recording qualitative and quantitative data, and conducting accurate data processing. Additionally, I enhanced my learner profile attribute as a communicator while presenting my findings to my peers.

for my experiment, I made standard solutions of copper sulphate in 100 ml of water, by increasing the mass of copper sulphate each time. I utilised my collaborative skills when making the solutions so that my classmates could calibrate each of the solutions. I was a risk-taker as I was handing toxic substances with the help of resources like gloves, spatulas and stirrers

The experiment I conducted on the combustion of alcohols was an exciting one, and I am proud of the effort I put into it. I had to use my research and self-management skills to find the best procedure to use, and I made sure to carry out the experiment with utmost care. This shows my self management skill.

I was very careful during the experiment, following all the instructions accurately. This demonstrated my attention to detail, which is a vital skill not only in science but also in other academic fields and my future career.

One aspect I am particularly proud of is my willingness to take risks. As I mentioned, the experiment required the use of burning and fire, which can be intimidating for some students. However, I showed resilience and courage in taking on this challenge, which demonstrates the IB learner profile of being a risk-taker.

In conclusion, my reflection on the combustion of alcohols experiment highlights my research and self-management skills, as well as my ability to take risks and be a responsible student. I am pleased with the results of the experiment and am looking forward to applying my newfound knowledge in future experiments.

Chemistry Viscometer Experiment: Mehr Easwaran

This experiment was a new experience for me because I had never experimented with an original procedure that I had interpreted and synthesised on my own. As a result, this activity helped me demonstrate my risk-taker learner profile attribute, having attempted a new experience that I built upon my prior knowledge of typical experimental procedures as well as my research. Furthermore, as someone new to the viscometer, I conducted intensive research to account for uncertainties, understand the experimental setup, and most of all, to synthesise a procedure whilst referring to several websites from reliable sources such as Google Scholar, emphasising my dependence on my information literacy skills to grow my experiential knowledge relating to the Ostwald viscometer and viscometry in general. As I attempted to experiment with this apparatus for the first time, I encountered several failures as well, such as being unable to hold the liquid exactly at the meniscus of the viscometer, for I had to redo my experiment. Consequently, this required great patience and often critical thinking skills to brainstorm methods to avoid mistakes and improve the results of each trial, demonstrating my capabilities as an IB Thinker. All in all, I believe that this activity aided my understanding of the subject of Chemistry, but, more specifically, of viscous liquids whilst optimising my skills and learner profile attributes to the maximum to grow my confidence for conducting such experiments in the future, especially for my scientific IAs.
