The viewer is a mysterious book in a peculiar world, it’s one of those books that draws you in and leaves you in suspense....
Tristan has a love and passion for weird and wonderful things until weird and wonderful things turns into creepy and spine chilling events.

Day by day, Tristan would spend hours on end trying to find the perfect object , just as curious as himself. As a normal day outside - ruminating through boxes and junk one thing caught his eye, it looked alot like an ordinary box but one thing was different, although it looked normal it just did not feel right. As he was walking home the box sounded like it was playing a tune he knew well. This sat uncomfortably in his mind, all night-scaring him to sleep!

In the morning,Tristan woke up to the pitter-patter of the rain on the roof, he could not go to the junkyard today.Disapointed, Tristan went back to the box he had found the day before. He went to open it but the lock snapped open before he could touch it.The musty odure spilled out causing Tristan to cough ,violently.
There was an old toy inside-which looked like a robots head and a old stretchy band to attach it round your head.Tristan, (being curious) put it round his head.
There were also three iron discs lighing dead in the box, they clicked into the machine perfectly...then, they began to turn. Slowly at first, then faster....as the pictures came into view. The picture were eerie and gloomy on all different levels.

His mum called him for breakfast. No answer. She went into his room, opened the door to a musty smell but, nothing gave her the real reason she had come up to his room....she had forgotten why she come in ther in the first place, and she went back down to breakfast....

Really good book 5star.
Age 9+

One day he found a rusty old metal box that made him wonder what was it and what will it do to him? He then decided to open it up the lock just popped open and inside the musty smell of entombed air filled the room. Suddenly Tristan caught a glimpse of the silhouette of a mask he got the mask out on placed it on his face. The first time he wore it it was almost like it had been custom made but unfortunately it was blacked out in the lenses . He decided to pull a trigger to the side of the mask and it started to whir into action.

( James and Naomi ) 👁👁

Curious from birth, Tristan was an ordinary boy. He was fascinated by old and interesting artefacts found in the city dump. The curious boy, would collect things that caught his eye and take them home to study. One day at the dump, Tristan found an old box that had enscribments that he could not understand. The odd box led Tristan into a world of spine chilling events. He spent hours trying to figure out how to open the box. Then he put it down on the table and ...CLICK! The box’s latch snapped open.

Tristan’s eyes were drawn to an object that looked like a pair of goggles. Also in the box were three disks. So, Tristan inserted the first disk into the machine, he could see nothing. Tristan found a lever on the side and pulled it back. Deep inside a light began to burn illuminating the pictures...

All day at school Tristan watched the clock hands circle and circle around the clock until hometime. All day he had been thinking about the machine that was on his desk back at home. Later on, Tristan put the machine to his eyes but to his surprise the images had changed, he was very, very puzzled and frightened . Again and again he looked into the strange world of the viewer and every time the images had changed from the previous time he looked into that certain disk. Tristan put the machine down on his bedside table. All night he kept tossing and turning, all night the machine stayed in the same upright position until the morning when Tristan picked it up put it to his eyes and inserted the first disk an d pulled the lever on the side...

The same morning, when Tristan didn’t come to breakfast his mum went up to check he was okay, but when she entered his room he was gone. Tristan’s mum found the room in a state that it had never been before ( neat and tidy ). She saw the viewer looking straight at her. Then she turned and left the tidy room to go back and finish her breakfast. Completely forgetting about her son Tristan.... 😱

Book rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Recommend age : eight and up

This book is a very good and tense example of older children picture books.

This eerie book by Gary Crew and Shawn Tan is amazing with a brilliant twist at the end. Tristan was curious about everything and wanted to know how all things worked. As he got older his parents let him go out more often, his favourite place to go was the city dump, were he would scavenge for all kinds of interesting things. Pairs of old gloves, broken tables and toy trains, but one day his curiosity got the better of him...
An old box fashioned out of dark wood and burnished metal caught his eye. The temptation was so strong Tristan couldn’t help himself. When at home he opened the mysterious box and inside were all kinds of things. As he looked closer he realised there was a theme of lenses and things to help you see. There were telescopes, glasses and magnafing glasses. But the thing that Tristan was most interested in was a mask with eyes that he reckoned was an old toy. But strangely it had some wired disks behind it and and he notest the mask had wired slots to put the disks in , so he dicided to insert the first disk.
At first is was black, after a few long seconds of staring into it pictures of tradgidy and disaster started to flicker into light.
The next morning Tristan’s mum called him for breakfast but there was no reply, she called again this time a sound of curiosity in her voice. She trudged up the staires and to her surprise Tristan wasn’t there. All she saw was the machine, then forgetting why she came she returned to breakfast
