The Taiga are cold forests located in the subarctic region. They have long cold winters and short moderate summers. The regions are dry having slightly more precipitation than a desert. Taigas typically have permafrost. This causes shallow bogs to form. Taigas are characterized by cool weather and and located in high northern altitudes.

The forests are composed mainly of coniferous trees such as spruce, pine, and firs. These conifers are well adapted to the cold weather. The larch is one of the few deciduous trees capable of living in the taiga. Moss and lichen grow on the floor of the taiga. The shallow or absence of roots allow them to survive the freezing temperatures. All animals in the taiga are adapted to the cold. Native birds usually migrate south during the cold winters. Small animals such as rodents live on the floor. These are the prey of owls and eagles. Moose also live in the taiga and favor consuming the aquatic plants in the taigas' numerous bogs. The biome can support few large carnivores howevers bears, lynx, and siberian tigers live there.

Due to the conditions Tundra are largely treeless. Due to the frozen grounds are low to the ground. These include small shrubs, lichen, moss, and grasses. The short growing season leads to rapid increase in insect population during the growing season. The native lemming, hares, squirrels, and caribou store fat to insulate themselves. This fat also reserves energy. Birds tend to be migratory, leaving the Tundra during the formidable winters. The apex predators consist of wolves and bears. They adapt to the often-frozen climate with white fur.
