Throughout my engagement with dance as part of the arts learning unit, I can come to the realisation that dance does not only consist of physical movement, but involves a unique learning process that can profoundly impact personal, social and emotional wellbeing. Through further investigation and research, I discovered that incorporating dance experiences in student education can enhance student self-expression, body awareness and self-confidence. Providing a hands on experience for students to deepen their understanding of how dance can become a powerful tool for personal growth and development.

My personal involvement in drama activities during this unit has highlighted the significance of drama as a means to support children in participating, creating, expressing, and reflecting within a personal, social, and cultural context. From investigating, I discovered that drama can foster empathy and collaboration among primary students. From assuming different roles and perspectives, children can develop a greater understanding of other classmates experiences and emotions through drama. Drama activities involving improvisation and role-playing, promote and encourage teamwork and cooperation which in turn promotes social skills and emotional wellbeing being enhanced. As I engaged in various drama activities throughout the unit, I understand how the collaborative nature of drama can create a supportive and inclusive environment for all participants.

Exploring and investigating media arts has proven to be an eye-opening experience for me personally. Media arts has broadened my understanding of how technology and digital media can be integrated into arts learning. I have learnt that media arts provides opportunities for primary students to develop critical thinking skills, digital literacy and creativity. Promoting students to engage with various media tools and platforms, has shown to encourage the expression of ideas and perspectives in innovative ways and practices. I have understood the positive potential media art elements that can be utilised to engage and motivate students whilst fostering their social and emotional wellbeing through digital creativity and self-expression.

Supporting Social and Emotional Wellbeing Through Arts Participation

Encouraging students to participate in dance, drama and media art activities in the classroom has shown to elevate their social and emotional wellbeing. I have learned through this unit that arts experiences can provide a safe, comfortable environment for student self-discovery, emotional expression and building positive relationships. An example of this is through movement and rhythm and how these activities can encourage effective communication and empathy, which in turn can promote positive social interactions with classmates in the arts classroom. Collaborative drama activities can encourage effective communication and empathy, promoting positive social interactions. This reflection highlights the importance of integrating arts into the primary curriculum to foster development and enhance students' overall wellbeing.

The Power of Reflection in Arts Learning

One of the most important personal realisations I had during this arts unit, was the significance of reflection in the arts learning process. Through investigation and research, I have learnt that reflection allows individuals to make connections between their experiences, emotions, and learning outcomes. This practice can be particularly beneficial in dance, drama and media art activities. The practice enables students to gain a deeper understanding of themselves and their creative processes. Reflection plays a pivotal role in arts learning as it underscores the transformative potential of the arts. Encouraging students to reflect on their experiences, both during and after art activities, creates the opportunity for teachers to foster metacognitive skills, self-awareness, and emotional intelligence.
