Most students can reach a high level of achievement. There are several deciding factors. It has been my personal experience that when children, specifically adolescents, are allowed to achieve different tasks, they often want to continue following that pattern. Most students want to accomplish different goals in a school environment. Many students may not feel they can achieve in the traditional sense. At this point, we, as school counselors and differentiation on the teacher's end, can help students overcome this hurdle.

The IATs showed that I have a preference for African  Americans and that I have a preference for younger people over older people. I believe that these results were to be expected considering the fact that I am in my mid-twenties and I am African American. As a counselor in training, my goal will be to overcome my biases so that I can provide the best level of care to my clients and students. School counselors have the ethical and moral responsibility to advocate for students in the learning environment. We accomplish this goal in many different ways. According to the ASCA Ethical Code, school counselors must provide students with a culturally responsive counseling program promoting academic, career, and social/emotional learning (ASCA 2022). We, as counselors, have to give students an environment where they feel welcome and can accomplish their goals without judgment. Another way that school counselors advocate for students is by also teaching students to advocate for themselves. My goal is to be a school counselor in the middle school environment, and this age group is one of the first groups who need to realize how vital self-advocacy is for their success. We need to instill in our students that they need to also push for the resources they need and be able to communicate these needs effectively.

Ethical standards are at the heart of what school counselors need to accomplish. The criteria stated in the ASCA Ethical Standards give school counselors the blueprint to help our students achieve their social, emotional, and academic goals. The ASCA also provides school counselors with a clear vision for effective communication regarding community stakeholders. Before becoming effective school counselors, we must implement the ethical standards the ASCA requires.
