So far in this semester, the most beneficial activities to me have been the individual lesson planning, and then the times in class when Miss Potter shows us activities we could do with our students. Personally this has been very enjoyable and has given me many ideas for my future classroom. With the lesson plan, it has given me more of an idea of what goes in to planning a lesson, and how to approach planning a lesson for a specific age on a very specific topic. With the activities to use in our classroom, these have been beneficial because even though my major is elementary Ed and I wont specifically be a music teacher, I can see how these activities could be used in my classroom to learn in a fun and beneficial way.
-

At this point in the semester we have discussed a lot things... some of those things (at least to me) seem abstract. Although, I am unfamiliar with music or musical concepts I am interested and feel like I benefit from pushing myself outside of my comfort zone. I think the things that I find must useful or will most likely implement into my classroom will be the teaching strategies, behavior management, and the importance of building a community among my students in and outside our classroom e.g.: building relationships with my students and their families.
-BS

The most beneficial activities we have done have been all the mini lessons Ms. Potter shows us. I really love how creative they are and how we are not just sitting at our desks. I will definitely be incorporating lots of physical activity into my future classroom. Another thing that I have found beneficial is how we have created a positive classroom community. We have learned how to get students talking to each other and most importantly, how to avoid students forming cliques.
- AD

Honestly, it is pretty hard to narrow down one certain aspect from MEMT that has been the most beneficial lesson I have learned. I think for me personally, everything that has to do with classroom management has probably been the most beneficial. Classroom management is one aspect of teaching that truly scares me because I have seen throughout my entire life that the teachers that cannot get a hold of their classroom tend to bring failure for not only their students but themselves. I worry that as a teacher I will not be as strict as I need to in specific times that I should be strict my students and I fear that I will be a push over. One thing that has settled these nerves a bit has been the readings over classroom management as well as what we have learned about in class over that topic. Another aspect that has been super beneficial for me is learning about the different kinds of learning, enactive, iconic, and symbolic. I really do love enactive learning and I think that is something I am going to try to use as much as possible as a teacher because I think it is a great way to get children moving, get their brains working, and such a better and more fun way of learning rather than just reading from a textbook.
-GR

I think that it is difficult to narrow down what is the most beneficial out of everything that we've talked about, but I think that one of the most important things, as well as one of the things that I've most enjoyed learning about has been classroom management. I think that it has been one of the most enjoyable subjects for me because not only is it a very important subject, but through the readings and the activities that we have done in class, it showed me that managing your classroom doesn't mean that you have to be a tyrant so to speak. You can manage your classroom in a subtle way that doesn't even seem like management to the children. I also think that another important things that went along with this was having a good classroom community to where you don't have to be breathing down the necks of your students, and you have a good rapport with them to where they want to listen and learn from you.
-AB

I think the most beneficial things we've done in MEMT so far are the mini lessons she teaches to us as if we are students because it provides us with examples of how to teach certain concepts. I also really like that we are encouraged to think of other concepts we could teach using some of the activities because even though this is a music class, a lot of the activities can be used with a literacy lesson, math, vocal, etc.
-MB

For me, the most beneficial lesson thus far in MEMT has been on classroom management. Though we have only scratched the surface, I feel everything from the literature to the way it has been presented has shown it from a practical and applicable point of view. I have never felt very confident with the idea of classroom management, but I am learning new techniques that help make the task seem much less daunting. I would like to think I will be able to put these lessons into practice in my future classroom to provide a more harmonious environment for my students and myself.
-EV

The most beneficial learning forme in MEMT 341 is how many techniques we learn about classroom management and how to guide the class through a lesson. I have already been using these techniques and strategies in my Practicum classroom! I will be continuing the use of these throughout my teaching. Being able to see, every week, examples of different ways of teaching is extremely helpful. I was giving a math lesson yesterday, in the classroom, and it went so well! A lot of that is due to seeing the way Ms. Potter guides us through a lesson. It was so much fun, and my mentor teacher said that it was a wonderful lesson!

-BH

I think the most beneficial thing I have learn is the transition words Ms. Potter has used before we start an activity. I also love how versatile the activities are. We could use some song/dace for music as well as reviewing for a test or learning about weather, math, etc. Another thing is COMMUNITY I love the activities we do to create a community in the classroom. It is hard for people to open up and be themselves and these activities help us come together.
-GH

Looking back on our semester so far, I am incredibly excited about the plethora of creative, interactive and FUN, musical activities Ms. Potter has provided us. They are all beneficial, wonderful tools for me to have as a teacher, although, I won't be a music teacher specifically, as the activities can be applied to learn several subjects like math, literacy, science, social studies etc. I am so glad I've learned about the importance of movement with learning (enactive learning), as well as iconic and symbolic learning, which are necessary to incorporate too, to accommodate to all different kinds of learners. In my future classroom, I plan to implement all of these learning styles so that students can all reach their fullest potential. I also plan on borrowing several of Ms. Potters ideas for activities in order to teach interactive lessons, so that students can come to the most in depth understanding of the concept being taught, possible.

-RW

Thus far in the semester, I have learned many more new things than I would have expected to learn in a music class. I have learned more than music skills to teach my future students. I have learned many small activities to welcome students and help them feel welcome and comfortable. These are awesome because most of them are enactive and for my future kindergarten class, these will be perfect! I have learned why it is important to create a classroom community and how to create a classroom community. I think creating a classroom community for my future classroom is the most beneficial thing I have learned. I believe that creating a classroom community goes way beyond the classroom and I think our goal as teachers should be to better our students for life and not just in the classroom.
-MGB
