Alice Paul was one of the main organizers of the Women's Suffrage Parade of 1913. Paul campaigned in support of the constitutional amendment for suffrage. In 1913, Alice Paul came to the National American Women Suffrage Association and asked to organize a suffrage parade that would take place in Washington D.C. Paul and other members raised $15,000 to put this parade on. Inez Milholland Boissevain led the parade on the back of a white steed. She also had a banner that read "We demand an amendment to the Constitution of the United States enfranchising the women of this country." Twenty-four floats and over five thousand women followed Burleson. This parade took place on March 3rd, 1913. The organizers decided on this day because it was the day before the inauguration of Wildrow Wilson. Over five thousand women decided to march for suffrage along the same route that President Woodrow Wilson would take the following day. Alice Paul and the other protestors also held provocative signs. These were meant to portray their thoughts regarding women's suffrage. One sign read “Mr.President How Long Must We Wait for Liberty?” These women wanted to make a statement and these signs did. After an hour of marching about four blocks, the march turned violent. A drunken mob of men tried to break up the parade by spitting or sexually harassing the women. This ended with two hundred women injured and many arrested for obstructing traffic. With over half a million spectators and thousands of law enforcers, no one came to the protesting women’s aid. But these women held strong and continued to fight.
