You'll meet your tutors and start 'skills training week', developing vital skills to start your Foundation T Level childcare journey!

We will make sure you all have your timetables and are fully supported to settle into study at South Devon College.

This is our mini 'graduation', celebrating your learning over your first few weeks. A great time for reflection and looking to the future.

I'm looking forward to meeting you each week to develop your understanding around different childcare topics, hear about your placement experiences and also to support your personal development.

I have worked at the college for 13 years as a lecturer and an assessor. Before this I worked in nurseries, holiday clubs and taught English to foreign students at a local language school.

My aim is to support you to reach your goals within this sector, whether that is continuing on to further courses or into employment.

Our own teaching includes traditional delivery, hands on activities, collaborative working, practical sessions in and outside of college, guest speakers and the use of innovative technology.

Our students are assessed through controlled assessments and coursework by their college teachers, as well as being assessed in the work place by our assessor team. This allows for a well rounded learning experience and for students to demonstrate a variety of skills.

• A pen, pencil (ideally highlighter too)

• A note book

• A folder to keep documents - you will be provided with one

• A drink/refillable bottle

• Food items can be brought in but not consumed in class time, you may be entitled to free college meals, there are plenty places to purchase food & drink on campus

• Access to Microsoft teams app, access to moodle, SD connect - these can be accessed via devices in college, devices are available on long term loan on request if you do not have access at home

• comfortable clothing & footwear- you will be notified when you need to wear clothing for outdoor learning

  
  

When in your placement, it will be a legal requirement - a safeguarding requirement of working in this sector from the Department of Education, for you to have your phone stored away. To help you prepare for this, you are expected to put your phone away in class. If you are found with your phone on your person in placement, this will be considered a serious incident and will be addressed by the placement and college.

You will be asked now and then, by your teacher to use your phone as a learning tool, for a specific purpose. You will also use microsoft teams to communicate with your teachers and peers during your college day.

If you need to make or take, an important call, do so in break times. In an emergency you can discuss phone use outside of these times with your teacher.

• You come to placement in your SDC uniform

• You have suitable clothing, including warm/waterproof coat and flat comfortable shoes

• Placement staff dress code is followed in respect of make up, jewellery, hair

• You have food and drink with you in line with placement policy

• You have a bag where you can store your belongings and other items

• You adhere to placement policy in storing your phone to uphold safeguarding practices

  
  

Please note, no student can attend placement without a current DBS, the college and placement setting must have the details of this.

In the first week you will take part if various activities and sessions that cover the following areas;

In your second week, you will complete a safeguarding qualification. This will involve various sessions and assessments on topics that allow you to understand types of abuse & how to protect children from harm.

This week can be difficult for students as we teach some emotive topics, all students have support within this sessions to manage what can be triggering topics and also, to build resilience to professionally approach and manage this aspect of childcare.

It is created by the Department of Education (DfE) and is a requirement for all Early Years settings to follow & uphold. It includes both curriculum to teach and follow and legal welfare requirements that all settings must adhere to.

We will refer to both parts of the EYFS within our studies, you will have a printed copy of this to refer to, but you can also find this online by following the link above.

Carly has already asked us to support her Pre-School by hosting their Nativity this December. We look forward to spending time working with her this term.
