When I wrote biographies in primary school, I wrote them based purely on my knowledge of the subject. Sometimes, I did not have enough knowledge about the subject, so my writing became inaccurate and too brief. By doing tasks in research, I hope to learn more ways to gain more knowledge about my subject when writing a biography.

This task was very helpful in achieving my goal. Although it is compulsory, thanks to this task, I now know that I can interview the subject of my biography if I want to know more about him or her. In this way, it is best because information is given by the subject herself/himself, so the information given can be trusted. However, this task was not much of a successful one because my subject is currently only seventeen years old and not as matured as an adult, so he replied my questions with quite short answers. Therefore, there was not much information that I got from the interview that was apart from my own knowledge of him. Nevertheless, some information that I got from the interview was really helpful in helping me write my biography.

I feel that this task was helpful in achieving my goal. This is because by finding out how professional writers use artefacts, I learned a way on how to find out more about the subject of my biography. Through this task, I learn that by looking at a certain artefact, I can get more information of the subject for example in excerpt 30 of reader two, I have a clear picture on how the subject looks like. For my own writing, I plan to take photographs of trophies or medals that reflect my subject’s achievements, so I can be more sure and more precise on the achievements that he got. I admit that this task was quite tough for me as I have not tried using an artefact in my writing before, so finding how a biographer uses an artefact for her biography was a new experience for me. However, it was easier because in class, we had gone through ways on how to begin our biography, and using an artefact was one of the ways. It was relatively easy to spot which excerpts in the readers uses artefacts because it was obvious on which excerpts have photographs.

This task was useful in achieving my goal. In this task, I learnt to try to get as much information on the subject through artefacts from the subject himself. I did this task after doing task 11 because by doing this, I am more familiar of artefacts used for biographies. However, I feel that this task was not as useful as the other tasks as I had already discovered how artefacts can be used to get information by doing task 11. Also, the artefacts that I chose was a medal and photograph of my subject, so there was not much information that could be taken from the artefacts, except the letter artefact.

I feel that this task was very helpful in achieving my goal. Through looking at secondary sources, I learnt that we can know much more information about the subject. I did this task after conducting the interview with my subject, and I realise that the things said by my subject in the interview does not include a lot of short happenings like something that happened specifically at a certain time on a certain day. Through secondary sources, we can look at the subject from the “outside”, and not from the subject’s own point of view, and this really helps the writer, who is someone that looks at the subject from the "outside" (because the writer is not writing on the point of view of the subject), it gives the writer some ideas on how to write and phrase information on the subject in the biography. Through this also, we could know what kind of impression the subject leaves on others. I think that this task was relatively not too tough as it is easier to spot the excerpt with secondary sources, thanks to the dialogues. This task was a joyful learning experience as it made me realise how secondary sources can really contribute largely when writing a biography and make the biography better..

This task was also helpful in achieving my goal. Through this task, I learnt that by interviewing secondary sources, I can also gain more information on the subject. Also, I learnt that the secondary source will only be able to give information effectively if the source is knows the subject personally. For myself, I interviewed my mother, who gave birth to my subject, so therefore she knows a lot more about Zaf’s life, especially when I was not born yet or when I was very young. I did this task after doing task 7 because I would know what questions to ask my mother since some things were already said by Zaf. Besides that, I also did this task after doing task 12 because of the same reason, that I would know what questions to ask, after looking at examples of responses and contributions of secondary sources in excerpt 7 of Reader 1. I really liked this task as it was not awkward when interviewing because she is my mother and it was fun. Also, unlike Zaf, who I interviewed in task 7, my mother knows more on what to say as she is an adult and more matured.

Task 22 (6th task) 03/08

I feel that this task was helpful in achieving my goal. I did this task because I rewrote the beginning of my biography by using an artefact. I learnt how to do this task after doing the previous tasks: task 9 and 11. By doing this task, I am applying what I learnt in the previous task and after doing this task, I am more sure on how to use artefacts in my biography, and by using artefacts, I can gain more knowledge of my subject. As seen from the photograph in the second attempt of this task, I can tell that my subject was an enthusiastic person when he was younger as he posed like Peter Pan in the photo. Besides that, I used almost the same technique as excerpt 30 of Reader 2: from Prologue, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot, the excerpt I had analysed in task 11. This shows that I am applying my learning, to achieve my goal. Due to this, I am very glad to have done this task, although it is not under the research column’s list of task, it helps me in achieving my goal. I have to admit that this was an enjoyable task partly due to the presence of the artefact, the photo, and also because I really thought I achieved my goal after finishing this task as I now know at least a way to get more information on my subject as I have applied the artefact method in my writing, unlike other methods of getting more information of the subject, like through interviewing subject and interviewing secondary sources related to subject. By doing this task, I showed broad thinking as i did a task which was not from the research column, but still link to my goal.

However, I did not used the second attempt, for the opening of my biography as I had done it after the time due for the online copy of my biography. Despite being quite happy that I have achieved my goal, I was also upset as I had lost the chance to show a better opening in my biography, that could possibly earn me more marks. I really regretted doing the second attempt only after submitting the softcopy of my biography.
