         <description><![CDATA[<div><br><br>This book has affected my view of Canadian History. I learn something new each time I inquire about our past relationship with indigenous peoples. I think the question about renaming buildings and removing statues is a question for indigenous peoples to answer. If they feel it is a necessary gesture in steps to reconciliation then we owe it to them. Statues are created to revere, worship and celebrate those they portray. I think it is disconcerting that Canadians are celebrating a part of our history that hurt First Nations people. Removing a statue does not diminish Sir John A. MacDonald's positive contributions.          <title>The idea that all indigenous people were not given the right to vote until the 60&#39;s. The idea that they had to renounce their indian status in the earlier periods in order to be granted the right to vote. The fact that indigenous people were renamed makes me very uncomfortable.
