It's a very small painting, adorned with an imposing frame, like a jewel. Immediately, the resulting image has something “photographic”, almost 150 years before the invention of the camera. Indeed, the artist seems to have framed his subject, then directly captured and placed the photons of light, blurred or sharp, on the support. Having assumed the illusion, Vermeer reveals the pictorial nature of the image by letting threads of paint run from the craftswoman's workbox.

Comparer l'œuvre au schéma. | Compare the work with the diagram.

Consequently, the painter of the Empire, who also organized the event, was asked to build temporary Roman-style decorations to disguise the disrepair of the Gothic edifice, which was about to fall into ruin. But this is far from being the only fake element represented in this propaganda work, as it is more an intellectual construction than a testimony. For example, the artist adds maids of honor to the canvas to wear the Empress's mantle, instead of the Emperor's sisters, who hate her. Napoleon's mother is in the guest gallery, even though she was actually in Corsica that day, and the neoclassical painter is both at work on the painting and among the spectators...

| Leave the gallery for the stairs opposite.

On the face of it, it tells the story of an event that took place a few years before the painting was executed. While he did not sail for over twenty-five years, he ignored the warnings of his more skilled subordinates, and led the crew to disaster: the ship washed ashore on the coast of Mauritania. The tragedy had major media repercussions, as dozens of sailors were left dead on a makeshift raft. The latter were unable to board the longboats, while the noble officers were saved. The painting takes on a political dimension that elevates it to the status of a history painting.
