This was the motivation for the US to fight for South Vietnam for so long.

June 1, 1954 - This is considered the official beginning of the war and was when the first actions were taken.

July 21, 1954 - the Geneva Accords were put into place which split Vietnam in half into North and South Vietnam.

August 2, 1964 - The gulf of tonkin incident was what officially brought the US into the war. The Maddox (a US ship) shot warning fires towards a Soviet ship found on their ground and they fought back concluding war.

August 7, 1964 - The Gulf of Tonkin Resolution was approved which gave the president the right to “to take all necessary measures to repel any armed attack against the forces of the United States and to prevent any further aggression.” This meant that the US could do whatever needed to defend themselves, including going to war.

While it was fought in Vietnam, it was also a fight between the US and the Soviet Union. The Soviets were defending and providing for North Vietnam in hopes to spread communism while the US was fighting for South Vietnam to stop the communist spread. It was basically a continuation of the Cold war but using Vietnam as the “middle man” or the surrogate. Both the US and the USSR had the same goals as they did during the Cold war. The only difference was that this time they were actually going to war about it instead of just posing threats. The Vietnam war was simply a step in the long staircase we call the Cold War.

This meant that Vietnam was reunified and converted completely to communism.
