I think incorporating discussion around science ideas in the classroom is essential--I'm thinking about the idea of opening space for students to ask questions about any science topics that interest them and using discussion with classmates to debate ideas and narrow down questions. I'm wondering what kind of background/scaffolding/guidelines would be helpful in facilitating that open-ended discussion. -ND

Students may see different results or differences in hypotheses and have the opportunity to reason and build on each others ideas. -AG

( how can formative assessment support culturally responsive) I think that the building on the ideas, interests, and experiences of students in the formation of argumentation supports the idea of seeking out students fonds of knowledge. When we actively seek the formation of argumentation we ensure that they develop strong identities as science learners but also validate their experiences and understandings, making learning more equitable.

Before STR, I had never experienced these protocols as a means of discussion, and what they've helped us do, is to get inside our peers' brains.
I find this to be one of the most challenging for kids in Kindergarten to grasp. The demand of remembering their original thought, but then responding to someone else is hard. But I want to be persistent in giving them sentence stems and prompts to work on their ability to respond to eachother, not just the original question. -KC
