There are a lot of issues going on with the campus right now (housing crisis, recent construction, and COVID) and I feel this project if very telling of how things are going. Students are frustrated and left wondering how capable the college is at adapting to student needs and wants. • A problem that comes to mind is the lack of parking and meter issues. I think that people should be able to park at a meter longer over night so they can pick it up in the morning to prevent drunk driving. Also that students have to pay a generous about of money parking to attend school. 
• An issue that frustrates me is the project started on St Philips street with part of the art center. This is causing lots of traffic for students trying to get to and from school. I personally think it would’ve been more affective to of done this over the summer. 
• Something that I love about our campus is the preserved history throughout campus. I think it’s really special and unique, which inspires me to appreciate the history Charleston has to offer. 
• Something that breaks my heart is the lack of accessibility for students to go to class to class that might have a wheel chair, or crutches. Especially with part of St Philip and the side walk being blocked off in the middle of the school year. This is also a safety hazard for the amount of people crammed on one small sidewalk.

While this keeps the historic feel of our campus it does not allow for accessibility for all our students. I am currently living in a historic house that does not have a ramp or an elevator. One of my suitmates has a health condition that makes it hard for them to climb the four flights of stairs we have to just to get to our room. With limited housing next year this could force someone with a health condition and/or disability to live in these facilities that will not be accomadated for them. The litter everywhere and the homeless people that gather in Marion Square made my a little down on my walk, and I liked how the assignment asked for something that "inspires you to take action" so on my way home I did get another small cup of soup and gave it to the man that is always finding shelter near Spring st. I probably would have not thought to do this without this assignment that pushed me to think about things in a deeper way. People were littering even though there are trash cans every 50 feet, and there are no gender neutral bathrooms anywhere. However, I saw the most amount of problems while on it’s a small world. All the European countries only have white people represented as if POC citizens don’t exist in those countries. Many of the Asian counties were represented in very stereotypical ways, and Africa was treated like a single country rather than a whole continent that has many cultures. Finally, in the final room, there was a Native American represented in ceremonial garb, treating the outfit like it isn’t an important religious symbol. I personally never feel unsafe walking alone at late hours around school but many of my friends would say otherwise. As do all cities, the true characters come out at night. As someone who plans to have children in the future, I know I wouldn't feel comfortable with my kids walking around this dimly lit and open campus after sundown. I believe that this is an issue that has only gotten worse as the school year goes by (as maintenance doesn't always keep up with street lights). For example, on Liberty street at night, it's reminiscent of a dark and scary alleyway. Also, I swear at night there are only two security officers on duty campus-wide. This is a serious safety concern that could be easily addressed. Don't even get me started with off-campus...

A personal complaint I have is the lack of lighting on the stairs to my apartment. On a couple of dark nights, I've tripped and almost fallen going down these stairs. We direly need lighting to secure safety when walking down these old stairs. Also, when it gets cold enough, the steps freeze. When you look at many other universities around the world, you actually visually see the money students put into it, because they have nice furniture, beautiful classrooms. Whereas here students pay and arm and a leg and we don't see any of our money putting into better our school. I know it is Historical but that doesn't mean that basic things within the buildings, like bathrooms and classrooms should look constantly decrepit and dirty which is stupid because I know I pay a lot to attend here but almost each and every facility and basic necessity is lackluster. It honestly reminds me of how my public high school looked and I didn't even put any money into that. The first are those horse and buggy tour things. UGH they make me so mad! They can swear up and down all they want that those horses are well taken care of but I will never believe them. The second clip is just a cop. I do not like cops. And I especially don't like it when they come on my street and sit in the MIDDLE OF THE ROAD and don't move. The third clip is of the leaf blowers. I know they're just doing their job and making sure our campus stays "pretty" but they do it outside of my house at SEVEN AM EVERY MORNING. And it is really loud and wakes me up and sometimes a girl just wants to sleep in. Next is a clip of my front door. I live in a historic house and she is definitely historic. Lots of "character", you know? Then one day I went into the other historic houses on my street and they were all so much nicer than mine, have fewer people living in them, and are bigger. And that was an upsetting discovery. But this isn't necessarily about my house, it's about that stupid little plaque next to my door and the overall lack of accessibility everywhere on campus. How are people supposed to do stuff if they can't get around?!?! Lastly, is a two-in-one clip of Coming Street. The traffic on this street after my 3:00 class, when I am trying to get to work, is absolutely ridiculous. And if you look on the pole, you will see a public safety emergency call box that I would bet money doesn't work. These streets are scary at night. Especially when you're a woman of color. And what is public safety going to do? Most houses downtown are extremely old and protected by building codes to preserve their character and history which is awesome but-- so many homes (specifically near campus) are a serious health hazard!!! My girlfriend, roommate, cat, and I were all really sick for months. We took so many covid, flu, and strep tests until it finally clicked that we had a serious mold issue in the house we were renting. It took my parents threatening with a lawsuit for my landlord to let us out of our lease. Be sure to do a lot of research before you sign any lease to a house downtown. Another thing that bothers me is the old, wore down houses like these. They could be restored into beautiful homes which could possibly give housing to other college students. However, the process to be able to restore these houses is hard and rigorous. One jaywalker even asked, "How is this happening?" while they were crossing the street. How is this happening?!?! YOU! IT IS BECAUSE OF YOU! YOU ARE BLOCKING THE STREET.

They are all so stingy now. I feel like if it is my job to make the coffee and the food, I should be able to have a free employee meal and/or drink with every shift I work. Nope. Company owners make their employees pay for food and drinks. Even though we get an employee discount, I still find it unfair.

Besides that, I am also not happy with the state of student housing. Firstly, as we all know, upperclassmen don't even have the option of on campus housing for next year. Which at this point is beyond fine with me. Campus housing is not great; it's not even good. Today I wanted to open the windows in my living room since the weather was nice and I found that they have been painted shut! Other than that, we have rust on all our appliances, the wood on my bedroom door is split, and our stove is barely considered safe anymore. I list all these issues and I live in one of the more expensive and "nice" campus housing options. I feel like when I am paying more than $5 grand to live in an apartment with four other girls that we should at least have functioning windows.
