Civilian involvement has played a crucial role in Germany's Energiewende plan. Josef Pesch, along with 521 Civilian investors built 2 wind turbines outside of Freiburg. Freiburg, now a solar city, is a prime example of the individual Germans involvement. In the past, the German government was insistent on building a nuclear power point near the city. Local farmers and students protested the site, and now in the place of a nuclear plant exists an amusement park. As Volker Quaschning, an energy researcher, states, "Nuclear energy affects me personally. Climate change affects my kids" (National Geographic

Germany has plans to combine hydro power and wind energy in order to store more electricity from renewable resources. The wind turbine featured below would pump water 100 up into the turbine's base while the wind is blowing. When the wind ceases, the down flow of water would preserve the energy harnessed. Germany is also attempting to make all of it's buildings "climate neutral," but the reality is slow going (National Geographic).

Merkel has struck a deal with Germany's major energy companies to slow the transition to renewable resources due to expenses. The cost of electricity in Germany has increased due to the transition. Energiewende also faces a problem in the form of lignite coal. The switch from nuclear energy to cleaner power sources has increased Germany's use of lignite coal, the "dirtiest" type of coal (National Geographic). Now with the refugee situation, less time is being devoted to Energiewende.
