Quote

“ Well, I can tell you it made me all over trembly and feverish, too, to hear him, because I begun to get it through my head that he WAS most free – and who was to blame for it? Why, ME. I couldn’t get that out of my conscience, no how nor no way. It got to troubling me so I couldn’t rest; I couldn’t stay still in one place. It hadn’t ever come home to me before, what this thing was that I was doing. But now it did; and it stayed with me, and scorched me more and more. I tried to make out to myself that I warn’t to blame, because I didn’t run Jim off from his rightful owner; but it warn’t no use, conscience up and says, every time, “But you knowed he was running for his freedom, and you could a paddled ashore and told somebody.” That was so – I couldn’t get around that noway. That was where it pinched.” (Page 104 Chapter 16)

Analysis
- In the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Huck is having a moral conflict-ion. Huck is having trouble deciding what is right and wrong in his situation. Huck is deciding between Slavery and Freedom in regards to his friend Jim. On the other Hand, Jim is very exited at the thought of being a free man for once. However, Huck knows that because he was raised in a racist society/community, he is breaking the laws by aiding a runaway slave. Huck's heart is telling him to let Jim be free because he knows deep down inside that slavery is wrong. Hucks head is telling him to turn Jim in because if he gets caught helping a slave he could be in a lot of trouble.

Quote
x

"BIFF [with enthusiasm]: Listen, why don’t you come out West with me?
HAPPY: You and I, heh?
BIFF: Sure, maybe we could buy a ranch. Raise cattle, use our muscles. Men built like we are should be working out in the open. "(Act 1)

Analysis

Happy and Biff fantasize about leaving the city. and freeing themselves from their city lives in the business world. The thought of working with their hands instead of the city labor. This thought opened their minds to imagination. Biff and Happy feel confined in the city life to work their 9-5 job. They dream of living on a ranch with cattle and doing manual labor. This signifies their thoughts of freedom in America. They want to be free from the standard American life.

Quote
"He stayed there a week, walking the streets where their footsteps had clicked together through the November night and revisiting the out-of-the-way places to which they had driven in her white car. "(8.28)

Analysis
When Daisy left Jay Gatsby, Jay walked the streets alone in the rain. While Jay is heartbroken from the breakup, Jay walking alone in the rain signifies the freeing of his mind from his emotional attachment to the love of his life, Daisy. This relates to the American vision of freedom by Jay becoming independent and not relying on another person to be happy. Although at this point in the story Jay is in a dark place, Jay can still be in the process of being emotionally free which will eventually put his mental state in a much better place.

Quote
'I don't fucking care if I die. Most everybody else stays orange, all the time. Here's what orange is. You don't see or hear like you used to. Your brain chemistry changes. You take in every piece of the environment.....And then you forget that moment, too, and focus on the next. And the next. And the next. For seven months."(Klay 13)

Analysis
This quote is depicting the actions and thoughts of a military soldier over seas fighting for his country. Throughout his entire short story he depicts certain aspects of life in the army, as well as life when he comes back home. But what stands out about this quote is the mental capability these guys have to have in order to fight for out country and our freedom. They have to turn off part of their brain, and forget all emotions and just fight. This relates to the American vision of freedom through the idea of how much freedom means to certain people and how big of an aspect it is to American beliefs. These men go overseas to fight for us to be free and have a good life, because that it what they believe is right.

Quote-
"It was another 3 weeks before I got home and everybody thanked me for my service. Nobody seemed to know what exactly they were thanking me for....She looked different from what I remember. She'd gained weight, in the best way. Her shoulders had fleshed out. She had curves. She looked healthier, stronger, better. I was greyhound lean. and she'd never seen me like that."(Klay 63)

Analysis
This quote is demonstrating the frustration that is felt by Klay, as well as other soldiers I believe that fight for this country. Often times veterans find the types of things shallow because these people have never really experienced the types of things that go on overseas. This quote also just goes to show that civilians really know understand what veterans are putting on the line for us, and it makes the people fighting wonder if these people really care about them. This relates to the American vision of freedom by explicitly showing that these soldiers really don't know or care about the fact that these people know or really care about what they are doing. Instead these people that are fighting for our country all share such a similar passion to the idea that they believe we deserve freedom, as well as that is what America is all about.
