The most common form of oil drilling and the first from of oil drilling is Percussion or Cable Drilling which is the method in which a drill is used to bore hole in the ground particularly used for shallow oil or gas wells in the Appalachian Basin. The cable is a multiple-strand steel rope used to suspend the wooden rods and the drilling tools. The cable pulls the string of tools up and down as brought about by a walking beam at the surface. This has a blunt chisel end which smashes the rock with repeated blows.

Donald Trump on Tuesday, January 24 , signed executive actions to advance approval of the Keystone XL and Dakota Access oil pipelines. The Dakota Access Pipeline is a 1100 mile pipeline that is intended to transport the 400,000 barrels of oil that are coming from the oil fields in North Dakota every day. Currently most of that oil is transported by train. This new pipeline is planned to cross under the Missouri River at Lake Oahe, which is just about half a mile North of the the Standing Rock Sioux Indian Reservation. These Indians get their water from the Missouri River, any oil spill puts their supply at risk. The construction will also dig up Sioux's sacred archaeological and burial sites. The decision to build the pipelines set aside efforts by President Barack Obama to block construction of the two pipelines. Trump in December said that he supported construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline, which stalled last year due to protests opposing its construction on Native American lands.
