In "Fahrenheit 451" (the book) it is mentioned that many people overdose with sleeping pills every night. Mildred, Montag's wife overdoses on her sleeping pills and we can estimate from the text that she(like many others in the society) suffers from depression, but tryies so hard to do her job and be happy with her T.V. family in the walls like everybody else(and thats why she takes the pills:because somewhere in the back of her mind she knows she's unhappy and needs to forget her sadness). The author, Ray Bradbury, hints at this by using words and phrases such as, "Hell! We get these (overdose) cases nine or ten a night. Got so many, starting a few years ago, we had the special machines built." This tells us that not only Mildred but many others also are attempting suicide every night. The way they say it is as if it is a joke or no big deal, when to us as a modern society, would take this much more seriously. We would probably make the person who attempted suicide start therapy and go through a long process to help them stop feeling the way they do.

According to kidshealth.org, "Someone may use illegal drugs for many reasons, but often because they help the person escape from reality for a while. A drug might — temporarily — make someone who is sad or upset feel better or forget about problems. But this escape lasts only until the drug wears off." This is proof that depression (a mental illness is often a cause of drug abuse in not only teens, but adults also. This is a reliable source because all of the articles are reviewed by certified doctors. A doctor reviewed this article in January of 2014. Another reason they are reliable is they update the articles yearly, and are owned by the Nemours Foundation.

While we know that self medicating for mental illness can help someone feel better even though it wears off with time, it worsens one's mental state. Self-medicating, leads to drug addiction. Addiction can and will affect your everyday life (mood and behavior) and therefore is a mental illness. So, through self-medication with drugs you while it temporarily fixes the problem, you will essentially gain yet another mental illness in the process. Drugabuse.gov says that, "A drug problem can make a mental health problem worse. And a mental health problem can make a drug problem worse."

Sometimes, people with mental illness seek help. They see a psychologist or psychiatrist. When someone with a mental illness doesn't get help it often ends badly. For example, in the book, "Thirteen Reasons Why", Hannah Baker developed depression over time. She committed suicide because she felt that was the best thing to do. Not everyone with a mental illness will go to drugs or suicide, but when they don't get help it often can happen.
