That’s what I really like, the fact there was no face shown. - Sutton Crouch

I really found this piece eye-catching and very different from other pieces in the Early Renaissance. It is almost cartoonish with the bright blues, greens, pinks, and whites, and that sharp yellow ray of sunshine that draws us into the focal point of the piece, the oversized Mary. I also love how the angel in the pink has no shadow. That is a subtle detail and not one that immediately jumps out but it leaves it feeling unnatural and sort of fantastical, and I really like that.
––Cían McCarthy

I like this painting a lot for being out of the norm of some of the other paintings. Rembrandt really was not afraid of using red here, and it's almost entirely made up of hues of red (the black background and the father's white beard prevent that I suppose). I found the fact that the son has his left shoe off very interesting, I guess it represents the hurry he is in to embrace his father, although there may be some symbolic religious meaning as well. It strays from the typical genre paintings of Dutch Baroque as well because I believe this is a religious story, but it is still executed in a very normal, non-religious way, without any golden halos, rays of light, or religious symbols.
––Cían McCarthy

The undulating patterns makes the structure seem full of dynamic movement and with such fluidity that it seems unreal. I also really like how the inside is so impossibly symmetrical, so full of geometry and math. I love how it is so carefully mathematically planned, filled with geometry, and has theological ideas that behind the earthly chaos is a god that created a perfect universe based on mathematical and scientific principles. - Jose Leon

I chose the Isenheim Altarpiece because when we think of the Renaissance, we think of hyperrealistic, overly idealized paintings from the Italian Renaissance. Often, however, we under-appreciate how beautiful the Northern Renaissance was in its own way, especially the German Renaissance. This painting, contrary to the Italian Renaissance, conveys and evokes in the viewer an incredible amount of pain and suffering from Jesus and the other subjects of the painting. It is very dark, emotionally charged, and unidealized, showing Jesus's body more realistically aligned with what it would have looked like during the crucifixion– deformed, green, sickly. - Jose Leon

I think it is very symbolic and critiques society of things like hurtful, unrealistic beauty standards; the sexualization of women's bodies; visualizes of the silent and unperceived struggle with mental illnesses such as eating disorders; and expresses the fragility of the human body and how meaningless our existence. -Jose Leon
