Week 15: Disussion Question: On an airplane, an old man asks if you will change seats with his wife so they can sit together. You came early to get a window seat and don't like his wife's location. Do you move? Explain why you made the decision and what are some of the consequences of making it. by Angelique Hickman

I will move. Sitting somewhere else doesn’t bother me too much and I get the importance of him wanting his wife’s seat next to him. It doesn’t take much effort or time out of my day to sit somewhere else on a plane. It won’t hurt me either. Some consequences of making this decision are that I may be stationed at a seat that’s uncomfortable or not in a window seat area. So what? Like I stated previously, something like this won’t bother me much at all and I can make a small sacrifice for an elderly couple to sit together.

If an old man asked me to change seats with his wife so that they can sit together, I would definitely change seats with her without hesitation. The golden rule is to "treat others the way you would want to be treated". Being mindful of this, I'd remember that I would appreciate it and be really happy and grateful that someone did this for me, so I would do it for someone else for sure - especially an elderly person. I would make the sacrifice knowing that there is more happiness in giving than there is receiving. If I didn't, I would imply someone's sadness while it wouldn't hurt to merely move. Small actions like this that might make someone's day would also benefit both the person and I in the long run, knowing that I did the right thing. That only brings a sense of success.

If I was asked to move I would move. This is because I won’t be on the airplane for very long and it does not really matter where I am sitting as I can just sleep it off or watch a movie. Also, it doesn’t bother me so there is no point in separating the old man from his wife. I don’t even like the window seat because it is hard to leave you seat for the bathroom and getting food from the flight attendants is much easier in the middle or aisle seat.

I would move to let the old man sit next to his wife because it would be kind and respectful to them. Even if I came early to claim a window seat, it isn’t that important and it would be better to give the seat to the old man’s wife. If the wife’s seat isn’t that great, I could just distract myself with something so I wouldn’t notice anything wrong with the seat. One consequence of moving is that if the wife’s location is annoying to be in, then I might regret moving as it would make the airplane ride torture. Another consequence is that I might not be able to look outside the window and that I wasted my time to obtain a window seat before.

Although I made the extra effort to obtain a window seat and I do not like his wife’s seat location, I would still move. This is because it is mentioned that the man is old and may need his wife to sit next to him so he is not alone for a long plane ride. Also, assuming that I was alone, it would not matter to me where my seat is as much as it would to the old man and his wife, who probably prefer to sit together but didn’t have the option when booking their seats. Even though I like my seat at the window, I would still move because I would guilty for letting the old man sit alone because of me. Moving seats would be the right thing to do as well because I would not be too bothered by a change of seats, while the old couple may need to sit together. However, there may be some consequences for myself; for example, if I am switched to an oddly-placed seat, I would feel uncomfortable for the duration of the flight. Also, I may feel slightly frustrated that I wasted my time in obtaining a window seat just for me to move eventually. At the end of the day though, I would switch with the old man’s wife so the two can sit together.

I would switch seats with the old man’s wife so they can sit together. It would make both of them more happier if I were to allow them to sit with each other. Although the seat isn’t a window seat, it matters the most if everyone is happy. The couple is also old, so they might even be on their last flight. I would want their last flight to be memorable rather than ruining it. They also might need each other for certain reasons and making sure that they receive the attention they need from each other is really important. It also wouldn’t bother me too much to just take a few seconds of my time and just move a seat. At the end of the day, I’m on a flight to reach my destination and it doesn’t matter how I reach there. It would even give me more satisfaction if I am able to make a difference in someone’s life, even if it is a small one. It would make me happy making sure I am doing the right thing and allowing a couple to sit with each other. Some consequences of moving my seat would be that I wouldn’t be able to sit at the window seat which I originally planned for. As a young kid, it would also be courtesy to let an old man sit with his wife. A consequence of this choice is not being able to sit in the window. I wouldn’t mind this consequence as it would be a minor one. Just by being nice, I would allow the person to take my seat. This is just an easy gesture of kindness.

I would not move my position so the old man can sit with his wife. This is because airplanes are long trips and if I am uncomfortable in a spot then it won’t be an enjoyable experience. The couple also should have planned this out before they got on the plane as they are asking me to move. Also, I got a window seat and that is the best seat so moving would be really annoying. Some consequences of making this is just having the guilt of not moving because it is also an old man. But I also can’t just move because someone asked me to because I put in the effort of coming in early just to get a better seat. Overall, I would not move my seat as the couple should have came earlier which I did and I believe they should’ve planned this out better before they got on the plane.

I would give the man’s wife my seat. This is because it is not moral to keep your seat when a senior citizen wants to sit with her family. However, this also depends on if I am sitting with my family. If I was, I would be more hesitant to give up my seat since I wouldn’t be happy by myself. It is important to help others when you can, irrespective of their age. I would give up the seat for the woman so that she can be with her husband, even if it means I would be put in a worse situation. This is also similar to a situation where you are sitting in a chair but you see a senior citizen standing. It is always important to respect older people and giving up your chair for them is morally correct. Some consequences of making this decision is that I would be in a worse state on the plane. I could also be separated from people that I would want to be around. Despite this, I would give up my seat for them. This gives me satisfaction because making someone's day makes me feel accomplished and better about myself. Moving seats on the plane will not change how I get to the final location, so switching seats will not change much for the family to be together.

I would move without hesitation. It would not be too much of a nuisance for me to change seats on the plane. I presume the flight is not excessively prolonged, so it would not matter. Besides, I am terrified of heights and would not expect to sit near a window in the first place. You must treat others with compassion and regard, especially if it comes at little to no expense to you. I would much rather move than allude to someone else's despair. Also, if I am sitting alone, it would not matter much anyway. The man expresses a great desire to be with his wife, and I would not like to deny that. He never desired to render me any detriment; he just wanted to sit next to his wife. I assume that he had no choice, and if he did, he would have gladly booked a seat next to his wife. If I did not sit elsewhere, I would have felt remorseful the entire flight. Some consequences of this decision are that I would not be able to sit in my original seat, and receiving my baggage may be a hassle(however, I assume this happened before they loaded the cargo). However, this is a minuscule price to pay for the satisfaction of another individual. As aforementioned, I would switch seats without hesitation.

Yes, I would move if an old man asks me to move if his wife wants to sit there. I would be more comfortable while sitting in the window seat, however, I don't care about the seat that much and I would fine with sitting in an other seat. Moreover, it is the right thing to do to give up the seat as the old man wants to sit with his wife. Also, it wouldn't seem nice to say no to a senior citizen and it will also upset both of them. However, if I move, then that would make them content and they would be happy to together. Hence, I would sacrifice my seat and move to the wife's location.

I would move so the old man can sit with his wife. This is because I should always respect the elders and can also adjust a little bit for them. I would also feel guilty for the whole plane ride since I just rejected an old man. The man also might glare at me the whole plane ride. Also, elders don’t have much time to live. Cutting their plane ride experience will only give them an unsatisfied death. Other than that, old people need each other to take care of one another. The old man might have some problem that I don’t know of. Not letting him sit with his wife can result in a major problem for the old man and me.

No, I wouldn’t move my seat. This is because I paid money in order to be able to get that seat. I would not like to move somewhere that would only cause me discomfort only for the benefit of someone else. I also believe that if the couple wanted to sit next to each other, they should have booked early on. It would save them the trouble and everyone else would be happier. But now if they did want to fix the situation, the old man could ask the person sitting next to his wife to move so that they could also sit together like that as well. It would be easier for both of them and for me as well to be able to enjoy the comfort of my seat. Now, I might be viewed as rude or a mean person because of this however, I only made this decision logically and because I care about where I want to sit.

I would get up and move because it would be the right thing to do. Even though I would not like the location of my new seat, it would be unfair to keep an old couple separate for my own personal gain. Even though they are strangers and I paid money for my seat on the flight, I would still not want to make their flight less memorable. It is only fair that they sit together. In a movie, I saw a woman on a flight, who wanted to sit on someone else’s seat and when they refused, she threw a huge tantrum in front of all of the passengers. Eventually, one of the other passengers gave her their seat, and they were rewarded by being moved up from economy to business class. This shows that kindness always results in rewards. Making someone else’s day should be the best reward possible. Some consequences of making this decision is that I may not be able to have the best flight experience. Though I may not receive the seat I wanted to sit in, I would not regret my decision of helping others.

If I was in this position, I would move my seat, to let the old man sit with his wife. I know that if I was in this position, I would feel more comfortable sitting with my family, rather than a stranger. I wouldn’t want someone else to feel uneasy, especially when I have the ability to change that. Despite the fact that my new location won’t be the best, it’s a sacrifice I am willing to make, even though I may feel discomfort. Therefore, if I was in this position, I would move so that the old man could sit with his wife.

If an old man asks me to change seats with his wife so they can sit together, I would switch my seat without thinking twice. There are a plethora of reasons why I would give up my seat. Firstly, since this couple is older, them being comfortable and together on the flight is more important than me sitting at a window seat. They might have a medical background or fears. Even though I came early for it, I would feel better knowing I gave up my seat for people who need it more. In addition, it is an ethical thing to do. If an elder needs something more than you do, it is only right to give it to them. While the wife’s seat isn’t a seat that I particularly like, I would be able to give up my seat knowing that it is being given to someone who needs it more. The consequence of this is me not being as comfortable as I would have been at the window seat, and maybe not enjoying the flight. The positive outcome for me would be knowing that I helped those in need, and the old couple would feel elated and respected.

I would change my seat with the man’s wife. First, it demonstrates respect towards the elderly which is always the right thing to do. Additionally, I could find someone who does not want a window seat and switch with them. This way both of us are able to have a nice flight and sit in the places we want to sit at. The only downside of this is that it may take a while to find someone who is willing to give up their window seat. Additionally, I may also find absolutely no one who wants to give up their seat which would make me unhappy. If that happened I would have to sit for the rest of the flight uncomfortably, but eventually, I would adapt to my new seat, and it wouldn’t be as bad at the end of the flight.

I would change seats with an old man on an airplane so he could sit with his wife. I have been raised to respect the elderly, and have also grown up hearing the phrase, “treat others the way you wish to be treated” very frequently. By giving up my seat for the man I would be demonstrating these principles. There have been quite a few times in my life where my family has had to ask others on a plane to please move so that we all would have the privilege of sitting near each other, and it is only fair that I continue the act of kindness which I have been subject to. Although the location of my new seat would be one of discomfort, realistically(and hopefully) the old man has fewer years left to spend with his wife, and if I could help him make the most of this, I would. It is also important to note that in today’s fast paced world, it is quite possible that the couple is new to navigating the surroundings of a plane, or less independent in that type of setting when compare to me. I would have an easier time adjusting than them. By moving I make the plane ride easier for two people.
