Virginia Plan: It proposed a government with three branches: a legislative branch to create laws, an executive branch to enforce the laws, and a judicial branch to make sure that the laws were fairly administered. They also proposed that the legislative branch would be made up of two houses. In each house, the amount of representatives would be determined by a state's population, so that states with higher populations would have more representatives.

New Jersey: It also proposed a three branch government, but instead of two legislative houses, they wanted one house. The house would only have one representative for each state.

Compromise: The compromise established a two-house system in the legislative branch. The two houses would be the House of Representatives and the Senate. The amount of representatives in the House are based on a state's population, and there are only two Senators for each state.

They wanted to ban the importation of slavery.

South: The South didn't want to give up slavery because their agricultural economy depended on the slave labor. They wanted to continue the slave trade because they believed that their economy would collapse without the slave labor.

Compromise: The slave trade would continue for 20 years after the Constitution was established. Once the 20 years were up, Congress would be allowed to ban the importation of slaves to the Unites States.

Effect: This compromise took a baby step to stop slavery.
