The specifics of the event was that around 2,000 Irish Volunteers (an Irish militia group) occupied the General Post Office in Dublin Ireland on April 24th 1916 and they read aloud the Proclamation of the Irish Repbulic. A seven day dog fight then ensued, with the British Army sending in Irish soldiers who were serving to diffuse the situation. After the British Army found success in putting down the rebellion, many lives were lost on both sides, and the Post Office was left in ruins.

A picture of the Proclamation

Citations: http://www.askaboutireland.ie/learning-zone/primary-students/subjects/history/history-the-full-story/ireland-the-early-20th-ce/the-easter-rising/

The romanticized idea of Ireland can no longer exist after so many failed years of revolution #en2490
Ireland has an interesting history when it comes to the story of it's acquisition of independence from Britain. After a third attempt for home rule had been put forth between the years 1912 and 1914. Just as Ireland seemed they might receive freedom, World War 1 broke out and put a cease to their opportunity of autonomy from British rule. This of course led to the events known as The Easter Rising in 1916. Ireland finally was granted definitive freedom by the Government of Ireland Act in 1920, which did result in Northern Ireland splitting away and staying within the UK.

A political cartoon depicted British struggle to hang on to Ireland

Citations:
https://www.britannica.com/event/Home-Rule-Great-Britain-and-Ireland

http://alternatehistoryweeklyupdate.blogspot.com/2014/10/my-thoughts-on-irish-alternative_22.html
