I asked Lawrence a few questions about how he mixes his tracks and if he uses compression and why. Here was his answer. From this interview I realised that compression can be used to bring instruments forward in your mix, and it can be used to make drums sound amazing and so clear. I will use the information that I got from Lawrence to help my drums flow well with my guitars. I will also compress the drums in my track to give my kick drum more of a bass sound. I wasn't too familiar with recording acoustic guitars as have never needed to or wanted to for the style of music I produce. I wanted to got for something a bit different to add an extra layer throughout my track. I was looking on youtube and found this video on how to record an acoustic guitar for a bright sounding mix. This video shows that condenser microphones can be used to record your acoustic guitars. With this video learnt that using different mics on the amp can help a lot as well as changing the position of the mic. I never thought of making your own sound by choosing an amp and not using a preset amp. I have discovered that my track is very similar to the style I listen to but all of my production techniques are specific to my sound. I feel that researching these production techniques has helped me grasp a great idea of why I am using these effects and how they can make a drastic different to my mix. When researching I am realising why I am using acoustic guitar or why I am using a specific effect on my electric guitars, it is all to show what my sound is as a producer. Most of my knowledge about production has mainly been from the internet, masterclasses and from talking to other producers at ACM. I think the concept of putting performers and producers in the same classes sound like a great idea, but in reality it’s not practical. If you want performers and producers to have the same amount of lesson time to their specific subject then the course should be set up the same as level 3 but not as intense.
