- Trade and the production of goods were overseen by organizations called guilds
- The two types of guilds were merchant guilds and craft guilds
- All crafts people had their own guilds
- Guilds controlled the work (set prices, dealt with complaints, punished certain craftsmen)
- Members of a guild paid dues to their guild
- To become a member of a guild, you had to undergo several years of training as an apprentice, and you had to start early
- At the end of an apprentice's training, they had to prove to the guild that they have mastered their trade.  They had to produce a "master piece" that they gave to the guild for approval
- After an apprentice has been approved, they either became a journeyman (found work by the day) or set up a business of their own, depending on how much money they owned.
