Rise of Democratic Politics (1820-1840)

The white man's right to vote was expanded in this period. Requirements of owning property, being a taxpayer, and serving in a militia were all abolished in the new constitution creating universal white man suffrage.

15th Amendment (1870)

Amendment established all men's right to vote regardless of color or color. African Americans right to vote was expanded after the Civil War and slavery being abolished.

19th Amendment (1920)

This amendment gave women the right to vote. Both black and white women's suffrage was expanded.

Indian Citizenship Act of 1924

Gave U.S. born Native Americans citizenship in the United States. Expanding the suffrage of Native Americans and allowing them to participate in elections.

McCarren Walter Act of 1952

McCarran Walter Act moved some barrier that stood in place of becoming an Amercian citizen for Asian immigrants. Freeing them to more liberties promised in the 15th Amendment.

23rd Amendment (1961)

Allowed residents of Washington D.C. votes in the electoral college. This gave those who lived in the nation's capital were finally granted the ability to vote in presidential elections.

24th Amendment (1964)

This amendment was created to break the barriers that remained for black voters in the south well after their rights were promised. Outlawing acts such as poll taxing that targeted low-income individuals and black Americans.

Voting Rights Act of 1965

Continueing efforts to stop issues of racism preventing black Americans from voting in the south, the Voting Rights Act banned activities such as literacy test and intimidation tactics from threatening black voters.

26th Amendment (1971)

Because Americans young as 18 were being drafted for the Vietnam War many believed that it only made sense that they could also vote. The 26th Amendment set voting age standard to be at least 18 years old.

VRA Reauthorization of 1975

Expanded access to non-English speaking voters the same ability to vote as all other Americans. Created bilingual ballot and voting instructions helping to remove barriers for language minority groups.

Voting Accessibility for Elderly and Handicapped Act (1984)

Expanded the right to vote to disabled individuals who had trouble reaching the ballots. Moving them to accessible locations and different voting options were ways the act addressed the issue.
