This species has invaded all of Florida. Over many years they began to spread from Southern Florida to all of Florida. We assume that they were brought to Florida by pet stores in Africa. Somebody also may have brought the fish illegally into the United States. They will also harm anything or anyone regardless of their size during a mating and breeding session. The males will slowly but surely kill each other in territorial battles as well. They will also attack other sea creatures such as shrimp that can’t breed as quickly as the African Jewel fish is able to breed. They are able to dig deep holes in the ocean or aquarium and destroy habitats and plants. The african jewel fish stays with its mate for its entire life until death.
