The African Jewelfish originated in Western Africa in The Congo River. This species has invaded all of Florida. Over many years they began to spread from Southern Florida to all of Florida. We assume that they were brought to Florida by pet stores in Africa. Somebody also may have brought the fish illegally into the United States. They can live in many types of water which allows them to travel throughout Florida.

African Jewelfish are causing damage to the environment because they’re very territorial when it comes to breeding and their small communities. They will also harm anything or anyone regardless of their size during a mating and breeding session. The males will slowly but surely kill each other in territorial battles as well. They will also attack other sea creatures such as shrimp that can’t breed as quickly as the African Jewel fish is able to breed. They are able to dig deep holes in the ocean or aquarium and destroy habitats and plants. Likewise they will attack humans if humans interact with them.

It was introduced by pet stores and spread all throughout Florida. It was originated in Western Africa and were brought here because they were unsuitable for Africa because of their aggressive territorial behavior. so that caused them to be moved to the U.S. This has caused them to migrate all throughout Florida causing many problems like harming other fish, humans, and the environment. This is how they became an Invasive Species.

They are controlling this problem by biologists who volunteered to conduct a ‘bio blitz’ — a quick, but intense assessment scientists conduct when they lack the money needed for a full scientific review. Schofield’s blitzes, called Fish Slams have helped build an extensive database that allows other researchers and the public to track, and report, the spread of fish. But while tracking efforts have gained momentum, understanding the impacts from the fish still lags.

The African Jewel fish got its name from it’s very bright turquoise spots scattered across their entire torso that look like jewels reflecting light in the water, therefore it gives them their jewel name. Another name for the African Jewel fish is ruby cichlids. The jewel fish can grow to 6 inches. If cared for appropriately they can live up to 5 years or more. The african jewel fish stays with its mate for its entire life until death. The African Jewelfish can lay up to 250 eggs to 300 eggs at a time. There are currently 13 recognized species in this genus: Hemichromis angolensis Steindachner, 1865.
