'The ideology of the holy war found its champion in Nur ad-Din. The atabeg was sincerely attached to the battle against the Franks and their expulsion from the Holy Land, now, in his eyes, the Holy Land of Islam. This did not stop him from using the argument of the holy war in furtherance of his political aims with regard to other Muslim powers, without hesitating to make truces with the Franks to achieve other ends. Thus, in 1171, when he annexed Mosul, which he had long coveted, and when he contested the sovereignty of the Seljuk sultan, now relegated to his Iranian lands, his justification was that he alone was repelling 'the Franks, the bravest people on earth'; this enabled him to obtain from the caliph a diploma of investiture applying to Mosul, Aleppo, Damascus and Egypt, thereby giving legitimacy to the sovereignty of the Zengid dynasty.'

The source's interpretation is that Nur al-Din used the term Jihad for his personal materialistic gain and political aims. he uses the argument of the Franks and repelling against them to deter historians. However it was a disguise to in fact capture the land around and obtained by the Franks to add to his own territory.

Jerusalem was always a central focus for his ideal, especially after his pilgrimage which occurred after his heavy defeat with the Franks n 1159. Arguably, this was to gain moral and religious support from his piers after his defeat. this was to ensure that he still had power but was viewed as more of a religious figure than a figure like his father. - when in fact it was to simply gain propaganda for his next attack.

SUMMARY: Nur al-din was devoted to fighting the Franks supposedly under jihad, using jihad Nur al-din was able to condone his investiture in Mosul, Aleppo, Damascus and Egypt proclaiming that he alone was enacted jihad to expel the franks from the holy land.

While he did commit to actions that did not agree with the definition of Jihad, he also did things to benefit the Muslim community and increase the teaching of Jihad within schools and cities. for instance: he fulfilled required roles that his position would allow such as allowing religious classes and uniting Syria as one Sunni state. Without the support of the religious communities within Syria he wouldn't have been able to take over Damascus in 1154 and 1168 of his achievement of the unified Syria between Antioch and Mosul

AGAINST - CRUMMEH The jihadist work performed by Nuradin was not mostly involved with ridding the franks from the Levant. Instead he was more concerned with reforming the state of his own faith. Minor (Jo against) jihad was more prominent.

Ed: The source suggest that Nur -al-Din used the idea of holy war to justify his actions, whether they were religious or material. The source in particularly puts huge emphasis on his use of the argument to unify the ,Muslim front and to prevent any of his potential material interests of his making alliances with the infidel the source also recognizes that he made great efforts to further his own power by the legitimization of the Zengid Dynasty which can arguably be for material or religious purposes but it is recognized the immense and lucrative power he would have gained as a result so his motivations are questionable.
