This book is about a boy and his grandmother taking the bus to volunteer at a soup kitchen. It shows the power of being grateful and positive in your thinking through text and illustrations. CJ’s perspective is that of a kid who sees the result of poverty and people who may not have the time, investment, or power to improve their streets and comments negatively, not understanding the reasons behind the dirt he sees. His Nanna points out that there is beauty where they are, and he notices a rainbow and other details. As he arrives, he feels happy, as he is welcome, wanted, and valuable and has built relationships with people at the soup kitchen. It is an excellent book to show how to make change through individual action and responsibility without talking down to children.
