The glucose also creates a colloidal osmotic gradient between the blood and the pd solution removing water from the blood.

Osmotic gradient means movement of water or fluid from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration due to pressure caused by water molecules . So onsmotic gradient takes place during ultrafilteration in PD. Ultrafilteration is one of the principle of peritoneal dialysis in which there is transport of fluid through a semipermeable membrane due to some driving pressure.

Naaz shaikh 59

Diffusion is the osmotic gradient for PD. The role of Diffusion is to move the high concentration solutes to low concentration in the membrane of PD. The solutes like excess urea, creatinine, potassium levels in the body which are in high concentration are travelled along the membrane towards the lower concentration and the solutes that is in the dialysate which is lactate or bicarbonate based is moved towards the capillary or to the cavity. It maintains an equilibrium between the two membranes.
