I found this poem very evocative. It automatically places you in an empathic stance and alters your perspective because you’re reading as if you were the person. It also made me think of loved ones lost. It made me consider my own practice and whether there are lessons to be learned in terms of delivery of care. Seeing someone at first glance is very different to actually seeing their true pain or anguish. It’s really about recognition of the person behind the condition, in my opinion.

I think this poem is a beautiful reminder that when we are caring for somebody elderly, or unable to communicate, we are only involved in such a small part of their life, and they lived so much before we came along. It feels important to me that we get to know the person individually and learn about their life and their past.

What a moving poem. I will keep this and always look back. That is why brushing someone's hair, painting their nails, dressing someone in their own clothes and lots of other things that are everyday tasks to us are so important. They are people. No matter their circumstance. Someone's daughter, someone's Mum, someone's sister or friend. They have laughed, cried, bunked school, worn their skirts a bit higher than their parents would allow..............but people that should be seen

A very eye opening poem that gives insight and teaches us lessons about seeing our patients as a unique individual. There is always a person with a past life full of wonderful things behind the patient with medical needs. It made me feel emotional when I first read this poem a few years ago. Even now it is a reminder about getting to know the person behind their conditions we treat and aiming for a holistic care approach at all times.

"then open your eyes nurse, you're not looking at me". That line stuck with me a lot. Sometimes the days can get so busy and patients see us running around and they think that we only see them as an illness in a bed that we have to change/feed/treat. But it's so upsetting that some patients feel this way. It's a reminder to always treat people with respect and dignity and to treat them as an individual. They once were as young as we were, and its important to remember that everyone has the right to be treated with compassion.

A reminder to look for the 'spark' in everyone - there is always something that will make someone smile/laugh, something that can start a bond between you even with the hardest of patients. However old we are, whatever our reason for being in hospital, there is a past and a life before how we are now.
I often think to myself, how would I want someone talking to my grandparents, would I want them to be ignored, treated with little respect, handled roughly when they aren't being easy. I'd want them to be given that extra minute or 2, to be treated like a person not just a bed number

This poem is beautifully sad. It tugs on your heart strings and makes you feel like you could have been there for this woman and given her extra TLC to ensure she felt loved just one more time.
That being said its life that gets busy and time being short, pressures rising that strip away this compassion that we are all feeling while reading this poem when we are actually working. It is a great reminder to keep going and keep giving and keep seeing people for who they are even during these high pressured times. Without these reminders every now and then I sadly feel we would all be "not seeing" patients for who they are. I hope with each reminder we all get as individuals we share it with a fellow nurse to help them "feel and see" again and it will help it grow continually to overcome the other barriers to person centred nursing.

It's hard to say that you might have actively done this whether on placement or at your part time job, whatever you work as, just giving 5 mins of you time, to give the service/care they need, because you never know what they are going through of what they have gone through in the past. It's hard to say whether you have seen the person in front as a service user/customer, rather than another person like you, who has almost the same needs, as you, just needing a little more care and attention, to be able to fulfil those needs. I understand nurses are very busy, whether on the ward, or on the unit, and want to get things going, but it's also important to try and understand the person infront of you.
