Reason 4: The Arts Help Children Understand and Express Abstract Concepts

After reading the article "Accessible and Alive: Six Good Reasons for Using the Arts to Teach Curriculum" reason four was the one that I could best relate to out of the six reasons. Peter Lawton a first grade teacher used the arts by mixing number into stories and poetry where the students would move around and act out the stories helped them to use their imagination to learn about math specifically addition and multiplication. The act of movement really does help to lock information into your brain. This reason reminded me of the class play we acted out in my 2nd grade class.

Native American Play to Learn Culture and History

In my second grade class we would do quite a few fun activities. Of these the one that stood out the most was when my class put on a play to learn about the different ways of living and culture for the different kinds of Native American tribes. This play had everyone in the class involved and for us used time travel to pretend we were going to meet the different tribes. Every time we would have a student dress up wearing the tribes style of clothing and the student would answer questions over the tribe that they belonged to. Really back then before the play most of us only learned about the Native Americans in the Midwest but there were so many different tribes all around and it introduced us to the diversity of each tribe.
