The last year was the deadliest on record for refugees in the Mediterranean, according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

In a press briefing on Wednesday, spokesperson William Spindler said that with two months still remaining in the year, at least 3,740 people were reported dead in the Mediterranean, almost as many as the 3,771 killed in all of 2015. "This is the worst we have seen," he said.

This uptick is in spite of the fact that far fewer people are attempting the crossing—327,800 so far this year, compared with 1,015,078 last year. The higher fatality rate may be due to a range of causes, from smugglers taking more dangerous routes to using flimsier vessels. Bad weather has also played a role in some deaths.

UNHCR is urging countries to make safer pathways available and consider "enhanced resettlement and humanitarian admissions, family reunification, private sponsorship, and humanitarian, student and work visas for refugees."
Article from Time

“Remember, remember always, that all of us, and you and I especially, are descended from immigrants and revolutionists.”

― Franklin D. Roosevelt
I totally agree with this quotation.Refugees flee by land, by sea and by air and come here longing for freedom but what we give them is hate and we don't want them here. But if people thought a little bit,it would turn out that our ancestors have left their country for the same reason. All these people are tired of war, death and going here and there.
they need cooperation:that's the word every country hasn't the foggiest idea what it means. They keep migrants in a terrible manner and they treat them as animals. So let's work cooperatively in order to turn the world into a place in which every single person is welcomed and not judged because of his sex, language, opinon, race or religion!

"When we lose the right to be different, we lose the right to be free."-

As the American Charles Evans Hugher says, what characterizes mankind is the difference of language, of religion, thought, skin, political and sexual orientation that makes us different and sets us apart from the rest of the people in the world. I fully agree with Charles because I think that each of us is unrepeatable and it is thanks to the difference amongus that we evolved and we will continue to do it. Furthermore we shouldn’t discriminate others because in my opinion races don’t really exist and the only difference that characterizes people around the world is the place in where they were born and live. I believe that we shouldn’t lose our uniqueness, I know it will be difficult to be accepted by others as we are but we have to try at least.

MEETING WITH BALDE MAMADOU - by Andrea Ferlito During my Italian lesson I had the opportunity to meet a refugee, Balde Mamadou and to learn about his experience. He talked about his life and the sevaral dangers that he faced. Thanks to this meeting, I've understood that life isn't the same for everybody and it's not always amusing and happy, but also made of suffering and sadness. In my opinion, every day when we wake up we should remember how lucky we are. While we have a happy and quiet life, in other parts of the world there are many people who risk their precious life every day either for war, poverty or for illness. Let me add another remark about people who are always complaining and crying for stupid and silly things. Probably those people haven't dreams, wishes, purposes, being empty in their heart and mind. On the other hand there are many people like Mamadou, who despite of the many troubles and difficult moments (as for example his father death) , go ahead, look forward to a better future with hope and serenity. Infact, even though he has faced many sad experiences, Mamadou is still full of energy, wishes and hopes for a joyful life, a permanent job, new friends and love. I felt glad to know him because I realized how lucky I am and also the big help I might give him and someone else like him. Also I grasped the importance of being deep and not superficial, being generous and not unfriendly and appreciating the small things of life.

With this comic, I want to represent the racism against immigrants and the useless decisions that some countries have taken in these years. I think that we shouldn't be frightened by migrants and we shouldn't fight them because everyone is different from the others and everyone can help us being better people. We couldn't imagine our lives without freedom, however we deny them
this possibility. I'm not doing anything practical to fight racism, and I'm sorry, but I think that all together we can defeat racism and indifference!

When there was war or poverty, we were the first to go to America and other countries looking for new opportunities. At the same now there are thousands of people that escape from their country: they risk their life to search for a better one and they often don't arrive at the end of the trip. And if they arrive for example in Italy they still have to bear many difficult situations. Refugees are seen with fear and suspicion without a real reson. In my opinion we have just to think of them as people who lost everything and go ahead just with the hope that one day things will change.

As part of the project "WINDOWS" there was a meeting with a refugee: Mamadou, a man who came to Italy leaving his family and his assets in the republic of Guinea, after having risked his life several times. His difficulties did not concern only the journey through a land controlled by dictatorship, but also the arrival in Italy, where he finally found someone who helped him. In a nutshell we came into contact with a reality very different from ours, we had an awareness of what real suffering is. Namely that of anyone who has seen everything he owed go up in smoke because of those who don't help the others but have more power. And this is just one of the many situations that the world is full of. People who flee to live.
