In my science classes, to support my EL students at the EXIT stage of the EMERGING level in the Interpretive mode, I might provide a pictorial glossary for EVERY concept in our textbook reading (e.g. pictures for "cell," "magma," etc.) and decrease the volume of text I have them read (i.e. just the 3 key paragraphs).

Then over time, to support their growth toward the EARLY stages of the EXPANDING level, I would gradually increase the amount of text I have them read and decrease the number of extra pictures. So what changes is decreased language scaffolding (pictures for concepts) and increased volume of text. But I'm never "dumbing down" the reading by decreasing its Lexile. I'm just increasing the amount of support I give in terms of pictures.
