In general, it would be a bad idea to make a bet with the Devil. He thinks he is better than anyone and everyone, and is willing to bet his life on it. This relates quite a bit to Chris. He is putting his life on the line for a dream of going and surviving in Alaska. This is a lot like most teenagers being cocky and arrogant. In the song, he is betting his life for a golden fiddle. In the book I would compare it the golden fiddle to Chris's dreams and goals in life. He wants to do what he wants, because he is a teenager.

He wanted to do this long adventure in Alaska. He also didn't want to listen to his parents, and just shut them out of his life.
