On October 16th, 2010 Eric LeGrand suffered a life long injury playing against Army in Met Life Stadium. During the 4th quarter the Rutgers kicked the ball off and as the ball was received Eric collided with his opponent and fell to the ground motionless. Eric was rushed to Hackensack University Medical Center, where doctors discovered he had a C-3 and C-4 vertebrae injury. LeGrand endured 9 vigorous hours of surgery to stabilize his spine. After surgery doctors told his mother that he has a 0-5% chance of ever regaining neurological function to ever walk, talk, move, or even breathe again on his own.

1. He can no longer get dressed, brush his teeth, get ready for bed ect.

2. He is constantly cold because the fracture in his spine prevents signal transmission that adjusts his core temperature.

3. He can not get into bed so he has a hydraulic patient lift that he straps himself into and it raises him into bed.

4. He physically can not roll over while he is in bed so he has a microAIR 95 mattress. This automatically rotates him every 30 minutes in order to prevent fatal bed sores.

5. Eric needs help at home which requires for him to spend 3 hours with a therapeutic nurse, 8 hours with a home health aid and 24 hours with his mom.

6. It takes Eric 2.5 hours to even get his day started. After he is ready Eric spends 4 hours at physical therapy.

Eric is a very high spirited person that never has any regrets. He said, "In my dreams I always walk, but when I wake up I am never disappointed the fact that I can't I am just hopeful that my dream will become a reality. And when that does I will walk off Met Life Stadium right where I lost my mobility."

Seven spinal bones make up the cervical spine in the neck portion of the human body. The upper section of the cervical spine consists of the first cervical vertebrae (C1) and the second cervical vertebrae (C2). The lower section consists of the third cervical vertebrae (C3) through seventh cervical vertebrae (C7). In Eric's situation the doctors declared that Eric LeGrand had a C-3 and C-4 vertebrae injury. The C1-C4 cervical vertebrae are the High-Cervical Nerves. This means that Eric LeGrand had one of the most severe of the spinal cord injury levels. An injury like this causes many consquences such as:

1.paralysis in the arms, hands, trunk, and legs.

2. the patient now requires complete assistance with activities of daily living, such as eating, dressing, bathing, and getting in or out of bed.

3. Will not be able to drive a car on their own

4. Ability to speak is sometimes impared or even reduced completly

In order to understand Eric's disability one needs to have an understanding of just what the spinal cord is. The spinal cord is a bundle of nerves that:

1.carries messages to the brain and the rest of the body

2. allows for movement

3. allows one to feel hot and cold temperature, vibration, sharp and dull sensations,

3. allows the body to sense position of the arms and legs.

4. When one moves, messages travel from the brain down the spinal cord. Messages also are carried up the spinal cord to the brain to allow one to feel sensations.

Furthermore, the spinal cord helps in controlling blood pressure, heart rate, and the temperature of the body.

There are nerves that branch off the spinal cord. They are called spinal nerves. These nerves are divided into five main sections (from top to bottom): cervical, thoracic, lumbar, sacral, and cocygeal. They help control bodily functions such as breathing, urination, and bowel movements. The spinal cord and nerves are VERY fragile.
