The union of a man and a woman, recognized by a ceremony, is as old as civilization itself and marriage is found virtually in every society. Throughout the centuries marriage has taken many different forms. But even in these early times, marriage was much about love and desire as it was social and economic stability. In European nations, marriage was traditionally considered a civil institution. Around 5CE great Christian theologians wrote about marriage and the Christian Church started taking an interest in the ceremony. It was at this point that Christians began to have their marriages conducted by ministers in Christian gatherings, but it was in the 12th century that the Roman Catholic Church formally defined marriage as a sacrament. In Catholicism, it is still believed that the Sacrament of marriage is a part of being a good catholic.

Therefore, over the past hundreds of years marriage has changed from being away a man and women were formally arranged into a marriage by family, to our modern society where most marry for love.

A catholic wedding is special, because when a couple marries in the Catholic Church, the ceremony speaks of love, permanent commitment, fidelity, openness to children, and perseverance in good times and bad.
It is these qualities which make a Catholic marriage a unique relationship. There is no other human relationship which requires so total a commitment between two people. The union, between the husband and wife, makes their lives together is very different than when they were two individuals. Once married, everything they do is done with the other in mind. They do not lose their individual identity, but that identity is enriched by sharing life with the other partner.

An annulment is commonly and incorrectly called a “Catholic divorce.” The differences between divorce and annulment can be confusing. Divorce and annulment aren’t the same thing; they differ in two ways:
- First, divorce is a civil law decree from the state, whereas an annulment is a canon law decree from the Church. In other words, the state issues a marriage license and the state issues a divorce.

Therefore, the church celebrate the sacrament or matrimony, and only the church can issue an annulment. As the Catholic Church doesn't believe in divorce.
- The second is the existence of the marriage after a divorce or annulment: basically that Civil divorce ends a civil marriage and that the couple no longer has any obligation as husband and wife. A Church annulment declares that the Sacrament of Matrimony didn’t occur from day one. as if the marriage never took place.
