I agree with Torrence's claim that scary stories help kids learn how to be cautious and how to not just rush into thing blindly. I feel like learning the dangers of the world, as exaggerated as they may be in the stories, is beneficial in the long run. Kids learn how to stay safe and learn how to avoid potentially life-threatening situations.

"Take the role of a middle-schooler writing a note to his or her parent or guardian asking for permission to go see a horror film or read a horror story. Use information from the text to strengthen your response."

Dear Mom,
There is this new horror movie that came out and I want to go see it. I think I should be able to see it because studies have found that horror helps kids get a sense of resistance to scary situations and I feel like it would help me prepare for the real world. I feel that it is only fair to let me go see it. Fear is a normal healthy emotion that is good to experience. If we shouldn't feel fear, then why were we given the emotion?
                               Love, Your Child
