Crane uses the introduction of the speaker going into the unrestricted part of the world to find love and compassion. The speaker tries to leave the constricted world religion gives him in "... I entered the broken world to trace the visionary company of love.." The symbol of going into the broken world that is not restrained by religion shows how deeply the speaker would go to find love and compassion despite that world being "broken" this would later prove to be useless however. Crane later uses the description of a god and it's overpowering influence to give an overwhelming suppressing tone over the speakers goal to experience love and compassion. After the speaker establishes his goal to find "love" he explains how in vain the goal was with "that tribunal monarch of the air whose thighs embronzes earth... in wounds pledges once to hope" This shows the power God has and even though the speaker tries to escape it was meaningless. This is further convinced onto the reader by giving the majestic undeniable description.

Ivan, Alma, Kevin R.

Hart Crane uses figurative language to illustrate how the church’s religion imprisoned him like a prison by using the bell tower. The speaker shows that he wants to flee the confines of religion by characterizing the Cathedral bells in a similar way to an asylum. He uses confining and depressing diction when he discusses how he feels as though he was the church's “sexton slave” . Since a sexton is a laborious servant of the church, Crane emphasizes the struggles the church put the speaker through . This trapped nature is depicted as the speaker describes the church bells when they collapse. Crane describes the “terraced echoes prostrate on the Plain!” to show how to show the severity of the bells demise. The severity is necessary because the destruction of the bells is a metaphor to the speaker and how his religious chains were broken with the bell tower. The symbolism between the bells and the speaker both refer to the religious requirements of the church. And the religious requirements don't just refer to the speaker's life.

The speaker struggles to rid his new tower of the remnants of the old one after he succeeds in destroying the old tower. Crane uses the metaphor of the old tower as the old way of creating poetry and although it's been destroyed the speaker still struggles to escape the remnants of the old way. The speaker tries to write poetry but questions whether it is “cognate, scored of that tribunal monarch” of the old ways. By using the diction of a monarch, in reference to old poets, Crane implies that they held a powerful position in the world of poetry. We can infer that this is why he doesn't want his poetry to be similar to their poetry, which is representative of the old poetry.
