1. Is Buntin for or against gentrification?

In the article “The Myth of Gentrification” by John Buntin, it states the pros and cons of Gentrification and how Gentrification happens. Throughout the article Buntin states the fact that gentrification will harm the poor colored community due to the rise of rent. According to Buntin gentrification happens when a group of latinos begin to arrive causing new political leaders as well as change the character of the community. Although Buntin states the pros and cons of Gentrification he seems to lean more towards being against Gentrification

2. What is Buntin's main argument in this article

Buntin's main argument throughout the article is discussing about gentrification as a whole. How gentrification is not necessarily a bad thing but rather, can be beneficial for both white people and black people or other minorities. People from gentrification neighborhoods live a more stable life and have more promising futures, among minorities and white college graduates. Therefore gentrification is not the problem, but rather a lack of thereof, that hurts communities.

3. What evidence does Buntin present regarding the positive effects of gentrification on African American neighborhoods?

The evidence that Buntin presents regarding the positive effects is people are moving into run-down-but charming and historic-homes and loft spaces close to the urban core. Houses are restored, coffee shops are showing up and public safety improves.

According to the article, places are more diverse, there is cool shops, there is hipsters in the streets. When gentrification happens all these things are fun and games, but until what point? Gentrification is a general term for the arrival of wealthier people in an existing urban district, a related increase in rents and property values, and changes in the district’s character and culture. This is happening all over the place, New York, San Francisco, Washington, Santa Ana, and many more. While white people are moving into the gentrifying neighborhoods and raising prices for the community, the African American people are not moving. The African Americans will stay, but they suffer the rising rents. As rents rose, residents move less. “Black residents, particularly black youth, living in more diverse neighborhoods, find significantly better jobs than peers with the same skill sets who live in less diverse neighborhoods.”
