The plan took over 2 years to construct and it was to be carried out on July 20, 1944 at the "Wolf's Lair" in Rastenberg, East Prussia. 

Many attempts had been made on Hitler's life, so this was a plot by several members of the Nazi Party. 

The plan was in case of a breakdown in law and order OR if something would happen to Hitler. The Reserve Army, under the leadership of Fromm, was to seize communications and reorganize the government. 

The plan once designed called for the assassination of Hitler by Von  Staffenberg placing a suitcase under the table during a meeting with Hitler. The plan also called for the assassination of Hitler and Heinrich Himmler, since he was the heir apparent.

The briefcase included a bomb that could be detonated by Von Staffenberg. He then excused himself to go to the restroom to denonate the bomb. He then reported back to the meeting where he was called out for a phone call. it was at that time that Von Staffenberg left the building and escaped in a waiting car. He was to report to Berlin.

The bomb detonated, but the desk absorbed much of the force. Plus, since the meeting was help in a room and not a bunker (like originally planned), the room allowed the bomb to dissipate equally and not kill Hitler.

He believed that he survived because of "divine intervention" and that the attackers were amateurs. 

The conspirators were tried and executed by a firing squad. But Hitler also used this as a reason to go after the families of the conspirators. The executions were taped and then showed to Hitler for his enjoyment.
