Throughout all of human history medicine has been a key function of society. With modern medicine we see constant new inventions that save millions of lives and that makes it easy to forget that only 200 years ago germ theory didn't exist. I this presentation I intend to show a period room of the doctors before the current day understanding of modern medicine. I will start with how the rooms would have looked. Then show some of the tools that doctors of the time would use. Then the types of painkillers used. Followed up by some of the ways wounds were cleaned.

In the past when you needed a limb removed they would tend to use a bone saw. This was a saw designed to rip through the flesh and bone.

Considering the technology of the time, sometimes doctors had to choose between the mother and the child. Because of that many attempts were made in making the surgeries safer. In 1830 Johann Heine created the Chain Osteotome. The purpose of this device was to assist with cesarean births. It used a revolving chain with blades on it to cut away the flesh and bone to get to the child.

Whilst ancient doctors were ignorant of why sicknesses came about they still came up with solutions to assist the healing of wounds. Wine was a common antiseptic used in ancient times. The antibacterial properties of wine would help the patients have a better chance of surviving injuries. It would also be used to clean the tools of the doctors.

Another way ancient doctors would clean wounds is the introduction of maggots into the wound. Maggots naturally eat dead tissues, bacteria, and biofilm, which helps clean the wound and sanitize it. Such treatments were used up into the Civil War and World War 1.

Doctors in the 1800's were common to wearing their normal street clothes whilst doing medicine. Their ignorance of germs and bacteria's gave them no reason to change their work clothes from their street clothes. Doctors were also privy to wear all black. The black outfits were because of the seriousness and formality they viewed their job as.
