Francois-Marie d' Arouet, known as Voltaire (which was the name of his pen), was a french writer, and enlightenment thinker. He did not appreciate his family when he was younger, and grew to love his godfather. He was born in November 21, 1694 in Paris, and died on May 30, 1778 Paris. Some facts about him are that nobody knows why he named his pen Voltaire, that he drank around 40 cups of coffee each day, that he was a vegetarian and thought that it was crazy that people would eat things with feelings, and he was imprisoned four times!!

Voltaire was born in France and he went to college in Jesuit College of Louis le Grand. He then went to France and fell in love with the daughter of an adventurer's daughter, so the French ambassador he was working for sent him to France fearing scandal. He became known for his wits and dared to mock the dissolute regent. He then was sent to the Bastille and sent out of Paris. Voltaire was actually in Bastille many times. He went to France and then in his later life went back to Paris and died there because he was ill.

Voltaire attended to college in Jesuit College of Louis lè Grand, where he studied Literature. He says he learned nothing in college though. He wrote lots of books and plays including, Candide, Zadig, Diconnarie pilosiphique, Letters on the English, and Treatsie on Tolerance. Above is his named pen that he would use. His father really badly wanted him to be a lawyer and sent him to law school for many years, but Voltaire did not want to be a lawyer, and wanted to work on literature, so that is what he did.

How Voltaire Changed our Government

First of all, he helped our government decide on our first amendment because he strongly believed in freedom of speech. Our first amendment (freedom of speech) is something that I believe in too, because it means that you have the right to say whatever you want, and I would think it unfair if you were not allowed say anything you wanted to, because we are our own people so other people should not own our words. Second of all, he believed in freedom of religion which is another part of our first amendment. I also think that everyone should have freedom of religion, because your religion is normally peoples first most important thing and so if you take peoples religion away from them they would feel like you are taking away their whole life. Lastly he believed in the freedom of trade... Another part of the 1st amendment. I think that this should be allowed, as long as what you are trading is not illegal! As you can see, Voltaire changed what our first amendment would look like, and many other things too!!

He was very very big on reason and thought that things could be greatly progressed if it was all based off of reason. He also greatly thought that freedom of speech should be allowed, and once said "I do not agree with what you have to say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.¨ John Locke his friend also agreed with him on these things.
