The article discusses the integration of Major League Baseball through the story of Jackie Robinson. Until the end of the 1884 baseball season, there was an unwritten rule that excluded African Americans from the Major and Minor Leagues. Despite the popularity of baseball among African Americans, they faced discrimination, leading to the establishment of the Negro Leagues in 1920.

Branch Rickey, president of the Brooklyn Dodgers, sought an African American player who could integrate baseball with dignity. He selected Jackie Robinson, who played for the 1946 Montreal Royals before joining the Dodgers in 1947. Robinson faced intense racism, riots, insults, and death threats but maintained composure and didn't retaliate.

Teammates gradually accepted Robinson, and his popularity grew. He became a legendary player, winning awards and leading the Dodgers to victory. By 1970, half of all Major League players were black. In 1997, on the 50th anniversary of Robinson's debut, Major League Baseball retired his number 42 jersey. Today, all players wear number 42 jerseys annually to celebrate Jackie Robinson Day.

Jackie Robinson's legacy endures as a pioneer who successfully integrated baseball, and his impact is celebrated each year in Major League Baseball.

Key Points:

Segregation in baseball until the 1884 season.

Establishment of Negro Leagues in 1920 due to discrimination.

Branch Rickey's quest for an African American player to integrate baseball.

Selection of Jackie Robinson, who played for the Montreal Royals in 1946.

Robinson faced racism, insults, and violence but didn't retaliate.

Gradual acceptance by teammates and growing popularity.

Robinson's successful career, winning awards and leading the Dodgers.

Robinson's contribution to the integration of baseball by the 1970s.

Retirement of Robinson's jersey number 42 in 1997, celebrated annually as Jackie Robinson Day.

The article highlights Robinson's resilience and the lasting impact of his role in breaking the color barrier in baseball.

GRAF, C.

The article highlights Jackie Robinson's groundbreaking achievements as the first Black man to play in Major League Baseball in the 20th century. It discusses his stellar 10-year career with the Brooklyn Dodgers, leading them to numerous titles. Beyond baseball, Robinson became a civil rights champion, attending the March on Washington in 1963 and advocating for racial equality in letters to presidents. The article also mentions Robinson's 1944 Army court-martial, his later election to the Baseball Hall of Fame, and his post-retirement activism. The Virtual Pajama Party at the National Archives, centered on Robinson, includes online activities and a focus on a historical fiction book by his daughter, Sharon Robinson. The event aims to engage children in learning about Jackie Robinson's life, his challenges breaking the color barrier, and his broader impact on civil rights.

“Jackie Robinson & Civil Rights.” Education Updates, 14 Oct. 2020, education.blogs.archives.gov/2020/10/14/jackie-robinson-2/.
