The idea of motivation to engage students and teachers alike is a great idea. When students and teachers are motivated by a topic or something that they are doing in the classroom, they will automatically be more interested in it and pay attention.

Why did it strike a chord with you?

This topic struck a chord with me because it made me think about my own experiences. When I am forced to do something or attend a professional PD that I am not interested in or feel is a waste of time, I will not put forth a lot of effort. This is the same with students. If students are not motivated to learn the content, then they will not put forth the effort either. As a teacher, it is ideal to make your students WANT to learn and be motivated to learn.

Motivation is a way to promote student engagement and create a fun environment. This can be done by giving students choice of what they want to do and how they want to learn. This can be done by using centers. Students would be able to move around the room and get to choose how they are learning. They will be motivated to learn and be able to take control of their own learning!

One way to create motivation is by giving a prize at the end of the PD. In the video in the readings, it says if you reward the behavior you want, you will get more of that behavior. I know I love prizes and free stuff, so I am using my personal experience when planning my PD and trainings. In my trainings to promote engagement and discussion, I will give out a ticket every time an educator shares something. At the end of the training, I will pick a ticket to win a $5 Amazon gift card. This will motivate the group to be an active participant during the training.
